I have 105k restricted Star Options which I can use within 120 days. These expire at the end of the year. It is not likely I can use them before they expire given my schedule and availability of units where I might want to go. What are my alternatives? TIA.

Have you thought about scheduling a mini vacation for family or friends? CJ

You can also use them to buy resort credit at Vistana Resorts, if you have a trip planned this year.

Can you put them into II or not since restricted?

They might be usable for luxury hotel stays. I'm not sure if restricted options qualify. The hotels are listed on VSN site. They're not a good redemption value, maybe 2 nites for a long weekend, but better than having them expire.

My understanding is that you can only use staroptions for resort credit if you bought unit from vistana. Is that correct?

That is correct.

I believe the OP bought from Vistana.

If you have points to use this year, you can book with them and swap in the restricted options 120 days out by calling Vistana.
However if you have a very hard to get reservation, CS usually warns there is a slight risk of losing it, because they have to cancel and then rebook with restricted options. They've told me it has happened in which someone else had come in and booked before CS could rebook.

You should also be able to attach them to a reservation for next year at one of the applicable resorts. I did this with restricted options expiring 12/31/2021 for an April 2022 WKORV stay. It worked great.

How does that work? Thanks.

You call owner services, and they attach them to a future reservation at least 48 hours out. You get $110 for every 9000 StarOptions. Only some resorts have ways to use them though. In Maui we not only used them at Auntie’s but also for a Trilogy dinner cruise.

For more information, log into the Vistana web site and look at more ways to use StarOptions.

I had this problem last year. Contacted some friends we met on a previous Vistana stay and offered them if they could find a resort to use them at before the end of the year. They were able to go to Florida. I might have to do the same this year. But I have just looked at the Sheraton site and it seems like I can use the Staroptions towards a helicopter tour! Husband and son will be thrilled. I just want some cocktails and snacks at the restaurant, lol.

You can also use the chat feature on the website to have them convert to resort credit. I’ve found it is much faster and you can be very specific that you want restricted options used.

I converted $550 worth for a trip to WKORV in May and it worked out well.

Vistana.com has a chat feature? Why have I never seen this? I know MVC has one.

Edit: Wait, I see it now. It is much smaller and less obnoxious that the one on MVCs site.

Did you realize the Vistana insurance only covers you when you are on a Vistana vacation?

Do you know if it extends to an II exchange from a Vistana week? I assume it does, I put in a trip interruption claim today through this policy so I’ll be finding out.

If it works like the MVC policy it does. The key though is that you need to have the insurance for the use year that the week was from. So if you have a 2021 II deposit that you exchange into something and travel in 2022 you need to have had the insurance for 2021.

Getting back to the original post, if I can book a unit somewhere during the 4 month window with my restricted options, can I then deposit that in II? I see a couple of units at the Westin Coral Vistas available during the four months.

Is that how it works? And how long can I wait to deposit into (while I decide if I might actually stay in the unit)?

No you cannot. Only full weeks of what you own can be deposited into II. SO bookings, regardless of regular or restricted, cannot be deposited into II.
