DO you lose any perks by buying resale at a mandatory resort such as Maui? How does the conversion from Staroptions to SPG point work? CAn you trade in part of the unit for Staroptions or is it all or none?
You get a set number of StarPoints for your unit depending on the resort and size. For instance I would get 80K Starpoints for my Maui 2 bdm. - which is terrible, because it wouldn't even get me a week in a standard, no view room, at the Maui Sheraton or Westin. I would never do it! If you can't use the full unit, you are much better off renting it.
Can you trade in part of the unit for Staroptions or is it all or none?
If you own a 2 bdm. lock-off, you could keep/use one side of the lock-off, and convert the other side to StarOptions, which are used for exchanges to other Starwood resorts, but not hotels. Staroptions must be used by the end of the calendar year, or they expire.
For more info., read the TUG article posted at the top of this board.
In addition to not being able to trade your TS into hotel points, there is one other thing. You can't add staroptions from two different mandatory resales together. So you can't buy 2 Orlando weeks and then add the staroptions from those 2 weeks together to get one week at a high point resort like Maui.

Luckily I found this out from a Tugger before I bought too few SOs at WKV resale. I cancelled my purchase and bought 81K SOs instead. Buy as many SOs as you need when buying resale - my advice is to buy at least 81K SOs - these units are just more valuble in the long run and worth the extra cost.
