I am renting out some of my excess MVC points this year for the first time. I already had a taker for a small amount of points and that transaction went smoothly.

But now I have someone who is interested but wants to verify that I do indeed have the points I claim to have for transfer, and is asking me to send a screenshot of my MVC account profile showing my account number and point status.

Is this a reasonable request? Is there any way that somebody could scam my points or usage with that information?

I realize that I would eventually need the other party's MVC account number in order to transfer points to them, so maybe I shouldn't be concerned if they also have mine. I'm just new to the renting thing and want to make sure I don't inadvertently do something stupid or fall for a scam. (And I completely understand that people on the other side of the transaction may have the same (reasonable) concerns.)

That's a very reasonable request, at least the points screenshot. I have requested that too when on that side of the transaction and offered it even when not asked when I rented out points.

Just make sure to black out any potential sensitive info like the unit numbers - all they need are the number of points, expiration dates and "type" (to make sure they are not banked or borrowed or holding account).

I am not sure why they need the account number, and would be hesitant about that as well.

But you can definitely send a screenshot like the one below (with the deeded unit numbers and other irrelevant info blacked out - obviously leave relevant stuff visible) - I'd want to see that too if I was renting from someone.

I don't rent points to other people but have rented them myself. There is a thread on here about people getting scammed out of their points. A running theme is how the scammer would get account info. I would wait to hear from @StevenTing who runs vacationpointexchange as to whether this is safe.

Personally? I would thank the individual for his interest and tell him/her to go ahead and rent elsewhere because you don't wish to provide the information requested. This will avoid potential issues for you.

I would be willing to send a screenshot of my Club Points Balance page. It shows my name, MVC Benefit Level, point balances, and nothing else.

Under no circumstances would I share my account number with anyone but MVC.

I started renting points from owners in 2022. I have used VPE and Facebook as a source of finding points. The best and easiest way to build trust on both ends of a timeshare transaction is practice the lost ancient art of actually speaking with someone. This is a nonnegotiable. With a name, phone number and 2 minutes on google, I can find out a lot. I now have a single main source of points that is a Grand Residence owner. This year I purchased all my 2026 points in January.

Renters think a screen shot of an account is meaningful. This is a headscratcher for me. If I was a scammer, I can take a screen shot, turn it into a PDF, use a PDF editor, turn it back into an image and show you what ever you like. I am sure scammer have an easier process. I do not even have to even have to have an account. I can ask for a screen shot to show proof of ownership from an owner that I have no intention of renting from and use that moving forward.

Given that someone somehow was able to transfer points to someone without actually being the true account owner, I would be very hesitant to provide information that also included your ownership number.

It’s certainly true when that someone calls into MVC and pretends to be someone else to make the transaction.

Yeah even worse in theory someone could also transfer some shitty timeshare ownership to you without you even knowing it (your information is always somewhere with someone).

Thanks for all the thoughts and comments. I did not give out my MVC number as I can’t think of any legitimate reason why someone renting my points needs to have that.

The phone verification they do at MVC is pretty weak, if you know someone's email address and phone number, that's probably all they need to verify you. So there is some risk here I suppose.
