Saw ads on vacationpointexchange for points rentals. Assuming someone is willing to rent me a few 100 points at a reasonable cost, how do they get them into my account?

Wouldn't we both need to be on the phone with Marriott guest services simultaneously?
I'm hoping to rent enough 2024 points to get on a the wait list for somewhere and use the rest of my banked 2024 points along with the ones I hope to rent. Do most people take half the money up front and then half when they transfer the points? I'm just figuring the intricacies of the points system after having been a member for years.

Usually you pay 100%, provide them with your MVC account number and name, they call MVC and make the transfer. Thus the importance of renting from a verified renter, or to at least confirm for yourself they actually have the points to rent (e,g. screen shot showing available points and current date on computer screen, etc)

Yes, be sure to rent from someone who is verified and you should be fine.

No need to be on the phone at the same time as it can be done once you've paid the person who has the points for rent (it may take a few hours depending on how busy Marriott Owner Services are running at the time -- think Maui fires). You will need to supply your Marriott Account Number, and your name (who owns that particular Marriott account number) and the person who is leasing his/her points will run with the ball and take care of the transfer process for you.

Transfers can be done Monday thru Friday from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm (east coast time). Transfers can not be done on Saturdays, Sundays or Holidays.

Be sure you have an account set up in advance so that you can pay the owner of the points, i.e. PayPal, Venmo, etc.

Does PayPal's fraud protection/dispute resolution cover timeshare point rentals, or is that excluded under the "real estate" exclusion? If so, is it safer to pay with PayPal using your credit card, so that you have some protection through your credit card?

I doubt your cc protection will kick in since it’s PayPal. I purchased from a verified seller and it went smoothly. If you choose the PayPal option with purchase protection, you’ll be covered but the seller will likely pass the extra few percent to your total cost

I rented from both verified and non verified. In either case I have to speak with person before I did anything. On two occasions, I rented from IDs I recognized from TUG so everything was done via email. Process is easy and as already described.
