Is there any way at all to rent out an exchange week booked through Interval?

Their terms & conditions are clear, you can GIVE AWAY an exchange using a Guest Certificate, but renting is strictly forbidden. It's easy enough to do, but you risk Interval closing your account and banning you for life if you get caught. They may not catch everyone, but it does happen to some people, and the question is whether or not you want to take the chance that it will be you.

As @sponger76 said, no.

The biggest danger of this is if you get caught and your tenants are prevented from checking in. Then you're on the hook for their airfare, accommodations and losing your Interval International account as well. An expensive price to pay!

My advice? Don't do it.

And…..it states you are still responsible for the actions of your guest. If you rent to strangers and they trash the place…..

If it's not too late you can do a re-exchange with e-plus. If not you can pay full exchange fee to re-trade. Or you can gift the week to friends, family or business client.

Although the same would be true even if you rented a "legit" week (ie, you own a Marriott and rent it out, etc.)

I'm a long-time Interval trader, and have always occupied, never not gone. I have a couple weeks in 2024 that I might want to give to my brother. Is that "legit"? What is involved in using a guest certificate?

You can certainly gift it to your brother. Just log into you II account and click on the reservation and then click on the link to request a guest confirmation. You should send the confirmation to your guest, and they will present it at check-in.

I've shared Interval reservations with friends and family using guest certificates, no problem. They pay the costs, nothing more so technically it's not renting.

As long as you're not taking money for it, according to Interval it is "legit" to give it to your brother, or anyone else for that matter.

I'm sure II would say this is renting, technically or otherwise. Renting doesn't necessarily require a profit. See @sponger76's post #10.

I think the common way around that is to use the guest's credit card on the Interval site/app to pay for the guest certificate, and perhaps the Getaway fee (although that requires knowing up front prior to booking that someone else will be using it). But the guest giving money directly to the Interval member, say to cover MFs of the underlying timeshare used by that member to make an exchange, would be considered renting by many, including Interval, whose interpretation is the only one that matters in the end.

I have the guest use their credit card to pay the Interval fees, nothing more. I doubt Interval cares.

Technically the II rules are very clear, as stated on Page 8 of the II 2023 Buyer's Guide:

>>16. Confirmations and their associated Host Accommodations, including, without limitation, those made available as part of the Getaway program, may be used only for personal and noncommercial purposes. Members are expressly prohibited from exchanging or renting the Host Accommodations, including, but not limited to, offering the Host Accommodations for sale or rent to third parties through the use of a Guest Certificate or otherwise. ...

17. ... Members are expressly prohibited from selling or exchanging a Guest Certificate for cash, barter, or other consideration.

While we all know that II doesn't police rentals as much as they could, there are known instances where they have. Whether the risk is measurable might be up for debate but the fact is there are severe penalties for both the II member and the person paying a Member for an II accommodation via a Guest Cert if/when II chooses to impose those penalties.

Based on reports on TUG, enforcement action that II takes is to lock your II account then force you to refund the guest and still allow them to use the week you assigned via a guest certificate.

What Sue said - It's a definite risk. I know II members who have had their II accounts closed and lost all of their deposits/exchanges.

I have 5 weeks booked at Marriott Grande Ocean from December 30th, 20 through February 3,2004 and may not be able to go due to my wife's illness. Can I get 5 guest certificates and let someone else use them?

Are they Interval International exchanges or Marriott reservations?

Yes, you just can't rent them for cash compensation (if they are II reservations). You can always distress them in the Distressed forum and what happens in private DM stays in private DM.

As Denise M asked are they reservations you made with II or with Marriott. I will then add if II, were they getaways or exchanges? If II exchanges, I think you are the 60 day mark TODAY.....if you are going to retrade or eplus if you are considering that option, do it now.

To answer your original question (assuming II units), yes you can purchase guest certs and give away for someone else to use. Here are terms and conditions for guest certs:

In addition to the rental terms and conditions, II are clear in a number of places, that your II membership is for personal use. If you are routinely using it to process bookings for other people, that could easily be considered not personal use.
As others have said, it appears not to be strongly enforced, but it remains a risk.

if someone was so comfortable in thinking it was ok to do this, they should reach out to rci/ii customer service and inform them the guest is a renter....just to be safe!

And here is RCI T&C - they actually spell out "as a gift to friends and family"
