We are going to the Riviera Maya in early December with another couple. Due to our flight times, if we rent a car, we will have to rent for 8 days. We also need a larger car to carry the luggage back and forth to the airport. We are staying at the Mayan Palace. It is looking like the rental will be $300 to $500 for the week. Another scenario would be to use the Mayan Palace transportation to and from the airiport and rent a smaller car in Playa del Carmen. Just wondering if anyone has rented downtown Playa and which agencies would be recommended.

We have never rented a car in Cancun or Playa. If you made your reservations as a MP owner through the MP, they will send you a voucher for free transportation from the airport to the resort. Your guests can use it too. For the trip back. it is $15 pp for the shuttle or a cab for $20-25. The cabs are small, but 2 are generally less than the cost of transportation would be for a shuttle from the resort for 4 people.
The bus to Playa is $3 RT pp from the front of the resort. Taxi's are $18 from the resort (you can often get one coming back for $15). Just do the math and figure out what works best for your group.

we rented through Executive in Playa Del Carmen, but resreved from home in advance - after reading the www.mapchick.com website extensively regarding companies and insurance etc. We were quite happy with our little Nissan Tsuru for 3 adults and 2 teenagers without luggage. We used a Brant's company to get from the airport to our resor, but I agree that iof the MP gives free vouchers for even one-way you should use that.
