Refurbished laptops/netbooks on Amazon?

We're looking for an affordable option for computer number 3. Having the kids sharing is getting harder and harder as they get older. I've seen some refurbished laptops and netbooks on amazon and wonder if any of you have bought one. I'd want this one mainly for web surfing and some Word document use but am not looking to load it up with software or games. Advice?

I have a refurbished Dell netbook that I bought from the Dell Outlet online. It's fine.

I would really, really hesitate to get a computer or any kind of tech from eBay--it's like the Wild West out there! If it doesn't work, you're totally out of luck. And really there's rarely much of a savings compared to a good sale or outlet.

I'd trust one from Amazon if it's sold by Amazon or another large company that sells through Amazon and if it comes with a full warranty, but not if it's sold by an individual or a company you haven't heard of.

We have bought refurbished Macs from Apple.com - they're like new and have a full warranty; the one time there was an issue the computer was replaced overnight with no question. The other big computer companies may have a similar program.

OMG, Anniemac, I'm losing my mind. For some reason I thought this said eBay, not Amazon, last night! Whoops. Anyway, as PJRose says, I would buy a refurb from Amazon itself, but not from a third-party seller.

We have purchased refurbished laptops on ebay with no problems. Generally the refurbished ones come with some kind of warranty. Just check for the sellers rating - the closer to 100, the better.

This summer, we decided that we wanted less expensive computers to take on vacations so that if something does happen to one, it is not our main computer with everything on it. That is where the refurb ones come in. I am using one right now that I bought on ebay in August. I wanted a netbook and got a good deal on one. This has been the first vacation that I have taken mine on and have had no problems whatsoever. It sure beats lugging my 17" laptop around.

My husband bought a used Dell that is almost indestructible model to use outside with no glare while on the beach, deck, or around the pool.

He also bought a refurbished 17" Toshiba last year so he could have one like mine. It works great and cost $200 less than the one we bought new.

Another vote for a refurbished machine. I have owned more than one in my life and have not had any problems.
