Signed onto Redweek this AM and used what I thought was my normal email address and password. Got on and looked up an NEW ad which I had received the email notice for.

First, I noticed I had NO NEW MESSAGES under my id (on the left hand side of the screeen). Yee, Redweek changed something.

Then, I went to the ad and that was all normal and could reply to it. EXCEPT, there was a new banner, telling me to get the FULL REDWEEK etc I could PAY to become a member. WHAT? Then, I noticed, my Redweek userid was NOT mine (that I have had forever).

So, now you don't have to be a REDWEEK member to view or response to ads. They do give you a REDWEEK Member id (guess I have another one now). It seems you have to be a member to POST ads and perhaps see reviews (even brought me to the checkout and pay page).

I may be in the minority, but I've rented most of my units through RedWeek, and actually liked their policy of having to pay (buy an annual membership) to view/respond to ads. RedWeek generated more serious inquiries, because their fee seemed to cull out the casual browsers and looky-loos that respond to free sites. It takes a lot of extra time to answer all those questions from people who are just curious, and have no intention of renting. It will be interesting to see how that changes...

Same as always tease you up to the point of contacting the owner, then asking for credit card information, as if that was a normal step in responding to an ad

Based on an email notice of an ongoing search received today

totally agree. I used to get very frustated by people just asking questions and brokers wanting to know if i wanted to sell my weeks on all the free sites, including TUG, frankly. really annoying. now, people just usually send an email saying they want my week and its all done.
I stopped using ALL the free sites because they were creating more work than I wanted.

Here's another one who actually enjoyed having leads that were serious. The old model worked fine for me, but I'll probably continue to use them & see what happens.

Actually, myresortnetwork is free and I've never really gotten spam from them. I'm been avoiding CL, though I know others have used it with success.

As the OP, I appreciate your KIND WAY of reviewing the info I posted. Such love and respect being shared by you (via the internet) to the fellow members of our timehare community.

If I was in error on my analysis because I was NOT trying to contact a member of Redweek veruses reviewing my own ad ... I will admit that. It has been years since I was NOT a paying member on Redweek .... but I knew that the "account" was not mine by the lack of messages.

TIA,

TIA,

Linda, I cringed when I read Rent_Share's post. It was over the line. Unfortunately, I'm noticing waning civility on the TUG boards lately. Please don't take it to heart.

I do think RedWeek made some subtle changes to try to entice people to sign up and pay their membership fees. It looks like they will only let you go so far, and then you have to pay. You picked up on the change. Thank you for pointing it out.

This and the thread title is not true, but as chicken little said . . . . . "the sky is falling"

The subsequent posters ran with it as if it were fact . . .

Redweek will never get any cash from me

When I hear someone say this is really surprises me because RW is money in the bank for me. You must be renting something other than Marriotts because RW does so well for Marriotts it should be called Marriott Redweek.com

I stopped using Redweek 5 years ago. It's one of the least productive rental channels out there.

In your channels do you get alot of spam? Besides the fact it has never failed me I like that I get virtually no spam with RW while with the free sites I get 10 to 1 valid renters and my foreign lottery winning emails goes through the reference.

As a renter, I don't mind paying to contact the owner provided:
  • The owner is serious about renting
  • The listing is accurate
On other sites, I've contacted renters who never bothered to respond, who had already rented but were leaving the ad up in case the renter didn't come up with the final payment, who had someone on the hook but were looking for a better price, or who had an asking price way above market, just hoping for a windfall from a sucker I guess. Probably just lucky, but so far, every owner I've contacted on Redweek had a unit they truly wanted to rent.

However, Redweek listings haven't always been accurate or were missing key information. Unfortunately, on two occasions, I have renewed my lapsed membership only to find out from the owner that the listing I was interested in was not what I was looking for. If Redweek would put some effort into making sure listings were accurate, I wouldn't be left feeling dissatisfied.
