We are President level, but I've seen posts from folks who are Owner or Select levels asking if you can book a seven night stay at 12 months and then reduce the number of days after the 10 month window. The intent is to try to get around the restriction of 7+ days by reserving 7 days for the dates they want at 12 months and then later reducing to less than 7 days for the specific dates they want in order to reduce the chance the dates aren't available at 10 months. I don't think I've seen any definitive response to these questions in the past, so I thought I'd share what I've just seen.

I haven't made a points reservation since last year until this past week. I checked previous confirmation emails I've received in 2024 and this part shown below is new. Looks like it is possible to reduce the number days at those levels, but there are restrictions.

"Owners and Select Benefit level Owners:

If a reservation is modified to result in a shorter duration than would have been permitted at the time the reservation was made, the Club Points attributed to the difference in the number of nights will be returned in a Holding Account. For example, if a Select benefit level Owner secures a 7-night reservation 12 months prior to arrival, and then modifies the reservation to shorten it to a 5-night reservation within 10-months of arrival, the Club Points used for the difference in nights will be returned in a Holding Account."

As @Fasttr wrote, the language about Destination Points (now Abound Points) going into holding in those circumstances has been around forever. And knowledge about the pitfalls of shortening reservations has been on TUG almost as long.

But I am glad that MVC is now adding the language to confirmation emails so that owners can cancel immediately rather than be surprised when they see their points put into holding.

Thanks Fasttr. I didn't remember anyone quoting this information officially on the web page or elsewhere and since I saw it was new in my confirmation I thought I'd share. Glad to see it is documented online.
If the option is available for a new reservation you could cancel and rebook or you could take your chances canceling and rebooking.
