I recently went to an owners update and was told Hilton wants to get all of the resales off the market. I am sure this may have just been a sales pitch. So they made me a deal to take my 7000 resale points and convert me to elite by buying 14000 points for a difference of a whopping $55K:eek:

However, to get me to close the deal, the offered me one million Hilton honors points and when I declined, they upped it to 2 million hilton honors. I was so excited about the points that it almost clouded my judgement. In the end I decided if I want more points, resale was still the way to go since the elite benefits and extra points are not worth an additional 55K.

Has anyone else received such a high incentive?

Thanks goodness you dodged the bullet :)

This deal is great for HGVC...
(#1) They get the owner to give up 7,000 HGVC points which they can sell for $20K (in exchange for the 2 Million HHonors points worth approx $20K)
(#2) They get the owner to spend $55K by buying 14,000 HGVC points directly from HGVC.

This deal is really bad for resale owners....
(#1) They will walk away with $55K less in their pocket for paying HGVC developer prices for 14,000 HGVC points
(#2) They will receive 2 Million HHonor Points with an approx value of $20K but they will also lose the money they could have made selling the 7,000 HGVC points themselves (So the true value is $20K minus the value of their old 7,000 HGVC points)
(#3) They walked away with higher annual maintenance fees (old 7,000 points vs new 14,000 points)
(#4) They walked away feeling that they are in some exclusive club however for most, the HGVC Elite benefits are not worth the cost.

From a recent Honors sweepstakes - http://hilton.promo.eprize.com/hhonors/:fb/:tab/public/fulfillment/rules.pdf

1,000,000 Hilton HHonors™ Points. Approximate Retail Value ("ARV"): $10,000 USD.

NOTE: Of course that's based on 1 cent per point. It might be lower or higher depending how you choose to use the points.

I recently went to an owners update and was told Hilton wants to get all of the resales off the market.

By mugging resale owners?

If Hilton really wanted all resales it would be simple to buy them up, it's the salespukes that want them off the market so people won't search eBay and get buyers remorse and cancel.

Great analysis Alwysonvac.

Good Analysis. I almost had the 2 million points clouding my judgement until I realized I could just buy another 7000 points for about $12M instead of the 55K. I have hilton honors status so the lifetime gold was not that appealing. They kept saying that I would lose it once I stopped traveling so it made sense to buy it now for retirement. I can't believe they could tell me that with a straight face given my age :D

On another note, I value 2000000 hilton honors points at about $11000 even though hilton sells tham for higher. I would never buy directly from Hilton and they have promos about once a year that allow you to buy the points at about half the retail.

Thanks goodness you dodged the bullet :)
