Re-deed offered by Marriott

So we got an offer from Marriott to re-deed our Westin Aventuras and our Sheraton Flex into a single account (paying some extra money, of course).

It seems like a good idea because it would consolidate everything we own under a single account and upgrade our status.

However, I’m not sure they were being entirely truthful in telling us Marriott is trying to get American owners out of the Aventuras program.

Has there been talk of this? Is it true they are looking to get all of these owners into US-based accounts? Is there something going on with Aventuras?

How much money? How many points?

I have neither seen nor heard that Marriott wants to get U.S. owners out of Aventuras. I would be highly suspicious of anything a salesman told you to induce you to make a purchase. Especially if it is not in writing. In fact, the entire pitch seems shady to me. I would stay away.

Around 20k to take our Aventuras and Sheraton Flex ownerships, re-deed them into a single ownership and add 2000 points to upgrade our status. We would go from select to executive and have everything under just one ownership. (And we would get rid of the Aventuras which we never use)

Its a made up reason to try and get you to buy more. If you need club points then that might work, but the cost of those 2,000 extra club points is double the price you could pay resale. Did they tell you how much the annual maint fees would change? My guess is the cost per club point might go up.

Unless you have a reason that is worth the extra cost to move to the next level, you would be giving up the ability to use Aventuras, Flex, VSN and II to go to Sheraton, Westin and MVC resorts and be limited to whatever happens to be available in Abound. You loose a lot of flexibility.

I thought it looked like a good deal because they are taking back the Aventuras and the Flex at the exact same price that we bought them.

It's their standard ploy. They do it every year to us, offer to take back our WLR for the price we paid for it as long as we stump up thousands of dollars to buy something else. I often say "That's a great deal but can we do just part of it, the bit where you give me back the money I paid for WLR?". They tend to go very quiet at that point :D

Abound has an inventory set and around 600,000 users, so guess what the competition for inventory is like compared to VSN that has around 200,000 users and not sure how many for your 2 flex contracts.

In addition your Aventuras and Sheraton flex can exchange in II to MVC locations, whereas MVC Club points can't do that in II and only via Abound.

It all depends on where you want to go and when, the different systems have different inventories and different levels of inventory that you can access. e.g If you want to go to Westin St John, VSN is a reasonable choice, II is hopeless and Abound might be OK. Take a look and compare how many club points you would need to go to where you want to go vs the equivalent cost in VSN or flex or II using flex. If you want to go to Aruba II is a decent choice, Abound is possibly OK and VSN not at all. If you want to go to Disney Orlando you will be using II and a studio in low season would use 1500club points, take a look at how much of your flex it would use and compare the cost.

Only you can actually work out what works for you, sales will spin it as a great idea, because they get a big fat commission, so they would wouldn't they?

So if we get them to buy back our Aventuras and Sheraton Flex and combine everything into a new Sheraton account, that would be better? Instead of combining into a Marriott account?

You never use Aventuras which you bought retail?! You should seriously consider rescind your offer / deal / contract while you still can!

Learn to use what you have now first and then decide whether and how to add more in a TUG way (aka cheapest way possible). Your Adventuras is already in Abound and you can elect Abound! I don't understand why you need more while you don't use what you have!

I see how that can sound confusing. I meant to say we don’t travel to Mexico anymore, so there is no advantage in keeping a “home resort” there because we don’t use it.

Ok, but you can elect your Aventuras for club points and exchange it in II. Have you tried those?

There is nothing wrong with a "home resort", plus it's a little cheaper in MF compared to abound points. It's just better and more flexible than abound points.

Buy the Club Points that you want on the secondary market and just sell or giveaway the Aventuras if you don’t use it, it’s a lot cheaper. Or just use the Staroptions, or elect it to Club Points and factor that into the math. Why pay developer pricing all over again?

We don’t even have a contract yet. It was just a verbal agreement and they were going to send the contract and a notary.

Did you pay anything yet? If you have not, and you did not sign anything, then you did not get into to the contract yet. In that case, just tell them the deal is off.
Be careful, don't sign anything.

We signed an email saying we agree to the verbal terms of the offer, but no payment has been made and no actual contract has been signed.

We have sent an email to the rescision address, and copied the sales person and the contract specialist, to ask about the rescision process.
