We have an RCI reservation and on the website it still has a link to buy the travel insurance. Has anyone ever bought this insurance at the last minute and then canceled the reservation? We are facing extreme snowfall in Lake Tahoe and we're not sure if it will be safe to drive up. Is this a way to save our points on a last minute cancelation.

Travel insurance or points protection. Points protection gets you the points back but not the exchange fee (and obviously the protection fee). Insurance through travelex, you would need to look at what is covered. Generally if you need to book at least x days prior and weather :Travel insurance could help by covering you for extreme weather that's affected or delayed your trip and wasn't known about or announced in the media before you took out your policy. My guess is it either wouldn't let you book or wouldn't cover anything pre trip and would only cover things that happen on the trip. Insurance isn't going to let you book late and then cover pre existing conditions health or weather wise.

That's what I thought about buying it "x" number of days early. I made this reservation in Jan of 2022 with saved points. Oh well I guess we will play it by ear. We can drive to Lake Tahoe so the only thing we will lose IMHO is the old points if we end up canceling.
