RCI reservation in Mexico. What to do?

I've got a reservation in Cabo San Lucas at the end of April. I know things are going crazy in Vallarta and hoping things don't spill into other states. That being said, I have to consider my options. This reservation (5440 points) is a multiple re-book. First it was Jamaican on the Gulf which wasn't open in time so I switched to Coral Reef resort which also wasn't open in time after the hurricane. RCI gives you 60 days to find something after a disaster. I don't know how old these points are and if they could be saved into RCI.

Not sure if I should add points protection or not for $89. It looks like I have up to 31+ days to decide.
 
Things are fine in Cabo.... There are TUG folks there now and report all is normal. We go March 11th... No worries.

That's how I'm operating at the moment but I'm calling to find out what happens to my points used since this reservation has been rebooked multiple times.

Ah... Sorry. Missed that part. I think that you would need to call RCI about that.

I did. I just like brainstorming with the people here. RCI doesn't have any kind of directive for the Los Cabos area (yet). I have until 31 days to cancel and lose my exchange fee. My 5440 points are good until the end of this year. My Volaris airfare is refundable. I'll monitor the situation until then.

A friend in La Paz is saying no cartel related violence is happening in Cabo , La Paz or Loreto.

I figured that. I just like to know my options just in case. I'm solo on this trip. DW doesn't want to go.

You have approx 60 days until check in.
I would stay on top of the news & points protection a month before could make sense
 
I wouldn't make a decision right now. Give it some time. The Mexican Government will do a show of strength and the cartel will adjust. It will take some time for a new leader to appear in the cartel. They know that tourism is their lifeblood and won't do anything to harm that.
