Hi! I'm thinking about purchasing my 1st timeshare. Probably grandview or VV@parkway. I know the MF can go up over time, but can the RCI point value ever go down? If so, how likely would this be?

Point values are certainly arbitrary and can of course fluctuate year after year.

you can see in the exhanging forum where many folks report their value goes up, or down.

I suppose that RCI can adjust the valuations over time. Probably based on after-visit reviews submitted by members. But that's just a guess. RCI has never shares how they value any exchange, weeks, points, TPUs or anything else.

As an aside, I own at a resort that used to be 'worth' 49,500 annual RCI Points. The last 'Use Year', it transferred 57,500 points into my account. Whether that represented a general devaluation of points across the board, or an increase in the valuation of my resort is anybody's guess.

Unlike RCI weeks tpu's which can change quarterly in terms of what you are given and daily in terms of what it cost to exchange in, RCI points is much more stable.

In general it takes something big like the resort being re classified to a higher or lower status in the RCI system or if a unit was classified as a different size for example if the unit had 2 br plus a loft and rci decided it qualified as a 3 br unit.

Devaluation happens in the form of newer resorts getting more points so that you may no longer have enough points from your resort to get the same number of weeks or days. Non points units that you are exchanging into using points can change on a yearly basis if RCI either updates the crossover grid or allots more or less points for units that it lists with a range.

I know the MF can go up over time, but...
More accurately, MFs WILL go up over time, likely quite a bit more than inflation or cost of living.

But the points values do remain fairly steady. I can't think of ANY I've seen changed without a change in the category of the resort.

sorry, i guess i misunderstood the question.

if you buy 50,000 points...its always going to be 50,000 points.

however what that 50,000 points will get you, can certainly change year after year.

Actually that isn't always the case. See my example in #3 above. Might be as tschwa2 outlined. When I bought at this resort, it was 'Silver Crown', and now it's Gold. 'Magine that.
