JLB--for a Fairfield owner, you get two types of RCI weeks that can be exchanged. One is called a "visible" deposit, which allows you to search and book online. These have become increasingly difficult to obtain. When you have one, it works just like an ordinary week where you can search and confirm online and have a record of your transaction that can be printed out.
Then there's the second type of RCI/FF week--the "generic" deposit whereby Fairfield gives RCI an amount of points equal to a certain size/season of unit. For example, 28k points is equal to a "quiet season" studio unit. These deposits show up in your RCI account in the same block as one-plus-one weeks. They cannot be used for online searches and booking. You must call RCI's Fairfield desk to see if one of those weeks can pull what you're looking for. If you can get what you want, the generic week disappears from your RCI account but there is no record online of what you got for it. You cannot print out a copy or confirmation--you have to depend on RCI to snail-mail it to you.
It is quite frustrating to not be able to search online with all deposits. It's even more frustrating when you do get a week confirmed but don't get anything at all to show what you have. Earlier this year I reserved two units with generic deposits. It took almost 3 months to get the confirmations (after repeated requests) and when I did, one was wrong! They had one unit checking in on a Friday and one on a Saturday when they had both been specifically scheduled for the same day, who knows what the heck happened. At the time I had made the reservation there was ample availability at our chosen resort, but by the time I got the confirmation there was zero left for our date. Fortunately, RCI acknowledged the error and worked with me on it and we did eventually get the second week we had originally booked but we did have to sweat it out for a while. That stress could have been easily avoided if our transaction had showed up online--we would have seen the mistake immediately. Also, it would have been a big help if it hadn't taken 10 weeks to get the confirmation!
Why on earth RCI and Fairfield think it's a good idea to make these generic transacations so invisible is beyond me. I do really like the FF system but it has a major downside by making so many owners "blind" transaction-wise. And if they are going to do this, they should at least be prompt with snail-mailed confirmations.
