Rick is hungry and we have shopping to do, so we are going to Kapa'a today. Any places to recommend for a quick, less expensive bite to eat?

Go to Scotty's for barbeque. It's down near the library on the ocean side with ocean views. Ribs, chix, cole slaw & corn bread. Good Mai Tais or Margaritas.

Just got back ... miss it already!

Here are two of our favorites in the Kapa'a area (actually just south of Kapa'a):

Delicious, inexpensive, casual - Korean Bar-B-Q - in Kinopopo Shopping Village in the south part of Wailua on Hwy 56 (just south of Kapa'a). Address: 4-356 Kuhio Hwy, 823-6744.

Delicious, mid-range, take-out casual or eat-in slightly more upscale - Mema Thai - on the mauka side of Hwy 56 just north of Haleilio Road. Address: 4-369 Kuhio Hwy, 823-0899.

Also, we'd second bardweller's recommendation for Scotty's Beachside BBQ. It's a little bit more pricey than my first two recommendations. The dinner portions are huge! It's in the north end of Kapa'a.

If you want more recommendations for Lihu'e, let me know.

In Lihue, not Kapaa, but have you been to Hamura Saimen? And the local favorite next door, Barbeque Inn (try the blackened Ahi Salad). Our new local favorite is in Kalaheo, however - Kalaheo Coffee Company (actually has very good salads and home-made soups, sandwiches). Enjoy!

Thanks for your suggestions. We did go to Scotty's and loved it. We are going to try something new tomorrow, so keep the suggestions coming for the next 5 days. :)

Just posted our review for the Kauai Coast Resort in the TUG Review section and I listed our favorite restaurants there. Most were on the east side of the island, but a few for other areas as well.

We just got back from 3 weeks on Kauai but we didn't eat out much. We had to use up that 20# sack of potatoes & all those giant pork chops we bought at Costco!

We did have lunch at The Hanalei Dolphin. Portions are big, tastey and reasonably priced. Also had lunch at The Wrangler in Waimea located across from the Foodland. The burgers are huge. I had a delicious stir-fry thing with prawns. All entrees come with the pitifully small but fresh salad bar. Inexpensive. We sat on the porch.

We skipped the expensive choices in Poipu and had dinner at Keoki's Paradise. The catch of the day was Ehu, really good. Yummm. The Bali Hai in Princeville is still closed but the Happy Talk Lounge has expanded their menu & you can sit up on the terrace and enjoy the fabulous sunset even though the restaurant is closed.

We had the best shave ice on Kauai at Jo Jo's in Waimea.

While you are traveling up and down the coast I assume that you are stopping at the Sunrise Fruit Stand in Moloa'a (on the highway, a bit south of Kilauea) for the best smoothies on the island. No ice to water it down, just frozen fruit. Try the one with Macadamia Nuts in it.

For a local meal

Try L&L drive in just south of Kapaa in Waialua.

Or on north Kapaa or Hanalei the Polynesian cafe.

Both very good.

L&L is very affordable, I really like their chicken katsu. They meals are served plate lunch style with a scoop of Mac salad and 2 scoops of rice.:cheer:

The Polynesian has great food, in Hanalei they serve on paper plates in Kapaa you get indoor service in regular plates.

jmho,

Greg
