77,000 RCI points (Sunrise Ridge Resort, TN)
Long time (over 40yrs) week owner and we also have had RCI points for close to 15 years but we have never paid to extend either to the next use year. We like to vacation so we always use them all up. RCI gave us a 1 yr extension on both for free due to the Canada/US border being closed due to Covid in 2020, but that's the limit of our experience. I am seeing lots of people on the TUG Facebook group and other timeshare FB groups saying they have kept paying to roll them over, or extend them, for many years. One commenter today said she had 800 (yes 800!) weeks banked from years of saving. I was under the impression that after you pay to extend either one, then that's the limit and you cant keep paying indefinitely and keep accumulating the weeks/points for many years.

Can somebody enlighten me please?

First of all, I can't imagine that anyone has 800 "weeks" banked. If a person like you owned timeshares for forty years and owned ten different timeshare resorts during that entire time and never went anywhere but just kept banking and extending, that person would perhaps have 400 "weeks". :)

800 points (or whatever RCI calls their points in RCI speak) I can believe. Still pretty unlikely and hard to believe, but within the realm of possibility.

But, anyway, in response to your question, I have been extending my points for the past few years. I always did a one year extension thinking "next year" I'll be able to travel. But due to my now 99 yo mother's medical issues, I just haven't done so. But in recent years I've been pretty aggressive about renting my owned weeks, so I haven't added to the total from a few years ago.

But this year the max option they've offered me is one last six month extension. But offered me a way to circumvent that limitation. If I deposit a week, which will be "good" for two years, I can extend for up to two years. For a not too shabby $169 or so, which is worth it because I've got about 90 points BEFORE banking another week.

So that's my experience. Don't know what rules and regulations they have. But that's my state of understanding right now.

Of course, if I could rent out RCI exchanges, I'd chop my total down in no time. But that's not allowed. Owning timeshares is hard. :)

The whole extension strategy devaluates your points. I would recommend assessing maybe it is time to let it go.
