How do toddlers listen to portable music? I want to get my one year old granddaughter something to play nursery rhymes and other young music as the parents don't seem to do this much. When I was little (50s), we used kids record players. When my kids were little, we used cheap tape recorders. All the CD players seem to use earphones? I want something to play music out load without earphones so mom and kids can sing along.
Thanks for updating me!

My kids had a darling Fisher-Price cassette player, which I'm sure has been replaced with a CD version - it's a bit more "mature" than the cute one in the link above. This one was solid primary colors, red, blue, and yellow. It came with a headset and limited volume so the kids couldn't turn it up too high.

The other thing to consider with earphones it may be too direct for young children and hurt their hearing if they get it too loud.

The more noise it makes and the more pieces it has, the more likely it'll be a toy "that we can leave at grandma and grandpa's house for you to play with when you're there"! ;)

My kids have had several portable music toys like you describe, but they never seem to hold their interst for long. They have a keyboard that they love to play with and several books that play music (there's a separate "bar" attached to the book that has buttons that play common songs) that are consistent favorites. That may just be my kids, though.

We have a small Sony clock/CD player in our kitchen. I think it was like $30, but its about 8 years old. We play toddler CDs all the time. Our daughter is 18 months and she loves it.
