I know there are a couple of people on here that are beaders, and I know nothing about it. However, I would like to get some pretty beads and something to string them on as an activity for my daughter, who is having four friends over to celebrate her 12th birthday soon. Can anyone steer me in the right direction...what to buy, how much to buy, etc? If they all went home with a pretty necklace (not too childish) that would be wonderful.

Thanks!!

Sharon

You need to go to a bead store and I am sure the people there will steer you in the right direction. My brother just opened a Mega Bead store in Chesterton Indiana. They are doing pretty good. I guess there are alot of beaders out there. They have classes and I know that they are very helpful to their customers.

E-BAY!! Once you know what you want, you can usually find it on e-bay really cheap!! Also do a google search for for "beading patterns, and take a look at "about": http://beadwork.about.com/.

Lastly, an easy project is bead angel charms, put them on earrings necklaces, braclets, etc. Take a look here: http://home.flash.net/~mjtafoya/projects/angel/angel.htm.

Have fun and be careful, once you get into it, it is addictive...and it can cost a lot of $$$$$. Go to one bead show and you will be hooked!

Do you have a Michael's close by? They sell beading kits there and you can buy each girl one kit so they will come home with a completed necklace. They might be the easiest way to go since everything is already coordinated and you won't have any waste beads.
Check it out here first before you head to the store:

We just had a class at Michael's with the kits they sell. The kits worked great, but be sure to inventory the kits before the event as some of the kits were missing beads! Because we had the class at the store they just changed out the kits.

Another option is to pick up one of the kits with the instructions and diagrams and then buy similar beads to make the projects. It might help to make a sample before the party so that you can help instruct the girls in the activity.

Either way this should be a big hit, as bead making is a fairly hot activity right now.
