If you purchase a Marriott resale for a specific resort are you able to trade to other Marriott properties as well?

Only using II. Resales do not qualify for internal exchanges (using points) unless purchased as a bundle directly with MVC with DC points. You can purchase DC points resale, but I would suggest that you read some of the threads here before you do; MVC charges steep fees on these.

Just to add to this comment. Prior to a certain date, Marriott allowed week owners to enroll thier weeks in the new DC points system. That is why in many threads, you will see references to Legacy Points or Enrolled Points. Many of those people purchased resale and enrolled thier weeks into the new points system before that deadline date. To my understanding, Marriott no longer allows this unless as mentioned by lizap, you purchase the resale weeks from Marriott in a bundle with DC points. So the only way for a newly purchased resale week to trade is via II or perhaps through a peer to peer exchange system. Hope that helps in your understanding.

Would I need to purchase a II membership to be able to trade?

Yes. If you want to trade using II, there is an annual membership fee. That is likely your best choice if you want to use your Marriott to trade for another Marriott.

If you are open to other resorts and more concerned with the area that you are trading in, you can use a smaller exchange company like SFX. I've been very happy with SFX overall. However, if I am looking at a Marriott to exchange into, I'll go with II first, since they have so many Marriott deposits.

Once you are the owner on record at the resort, you can sign up with II. If you own other properties you can add them to the same membership as well, as long as they are an II member resort.

That date was 6/20/2010.

Yes, the annual membership fee is $89 per year. Exchange fees were $124 (+$10 if booked by phone) per exchange. I say were because II recently raised their exchange fees, but I don't know if the fee went up for Marriott to Marriott exchanges. I would imagine so.

We purchased MMVL resale in 2010 for about $36.00. We had a very good time staying at our home resort. We have also had two II exchanges to the Royal Resorts in Cancun. We will be going to MMC in late August 2013.
