Hi, my wife and I are attending a wedding in Cabo during the winter and noticed that RCI has a Rose-Studio and a 1 BR at Sunset Beach available.

the catch is we might have our then 5-month old baby with us if her mom can go also.

SB-like possibly seeing whales from the large oceanview balcony but don't like the idea of carting around with a baby.

Rose-like the convenient location but wonder if the size of a studio is too small?

we're in our 30's and like being around people and enjoying the local food and activities

any advice ?

I'm a little confused as to the number of people who will be using the unit. Will it be you and your wife and maybe your baby (who is "her mom"?) If there is a third adult in the party, the studio at the Rose will be too small and not afford much privacy. There are two double beds, a kitchenette, & a small balcony, but it's basically just one room much like a hotel room.

The one bedroom units at Sunset Beach are quite spacious, have two bathrooms, two beds in the bedroom, and a pull out sofa that's not too bad for sleeping on. It would be more of a hassle getting around in the little carts carrying a baby and the baby's accessories.

If it is just yourself, your wife, and the baby, it probably would be easier to get around if you were at the Rose. You can always take the free shuttle over to Sunset Beach and use the facilities over there.

Maybe you could put in an ongoing request for a one bedroom unit at the Rose. This month we had a studio, a one bedroom, and our own two-bedroom unit at the Rose for our party of nine. If you could get a one-bedroom at the Rose, you could request the floorplan that has two bathrooms (it's called the Executive Suite and it has a larger balcony along with the two bathrooms). Our son and his two buddies stayed in that unit and it was great. One of our daughters and her girlfriend stayed in the studio and it was fine for two people.

I just figured out that maybe "her mom" refers to your wife's mom.

If so, the studio will definitely be too small.

wow, thanks for the quick reply!
I like this forum already

sorry to confuse you, I was referring to my wife's mom
since we wouldn't be able to take our baby to the reception/ceremony, we would need my wife's mom to go w/us as a nanny.
but if her mom can't go with us, then we might have to sadly leave our baby with her mom here in the states or we would take the baby and one of us stay at the resort and watch it

an executive suite or 1BR at the Rose would be ideal but not sure how long a running request would take as we have a hold on a studio there now and low availability.

is there a good chance we would get an oceanview balcony at the Rose-studio through RCI? and do the whales cross that bay side ?
is the Rose area safe and to stroll the baby to downtown?

we've slept in the same hotel sized room before with her parents so wouldn't be a big deal to me to do it again...would be up to wifey

so you don't think carting the baby around at Sunset is that big of deal?
since this is our first trip to Cabo, we're planning on taking the shuttle or rent a car to downtown and marina area daily

oh and the reception will be at the Sheraton Del Mar and ceremony at a church downtown.
should we rent a car for the 5 day stay? is there free parking at these locations?

I think the best chance to see the whales would be at the SB. I think the water activities and boats in front of the Rose might prevent seeing the whales there. It is totally safe to walk around the Rose and downtown. The stroller ride may be bumpy as the sidewalks and streets are sometimes uneven. You could always ask for a higher floor or a better view when you check in. They are usually very accomodating & would probably let you look at whatever rooms are available and pick the one you want. Just ask. See the link to a map of the property below.

so you don't think carting the baby around at Sunset is that big of deal? That would be your call. The SB resort is built on a hillside and is very spread out. It would be more of a hassle to get around it than at the Rose, which is smaller.

See the map below for a better perspective on how close you'll be to town from the Rose. With the road construction downtown, it would be more of a hassle to try to drive around there than it would be to walk.

oh and the reception will be at the Sheraton Del Mar and ceremony at a church downtown. Do you know if the church is in Cabo San Lucas or San Jose del Cabo? If it's in San Jose, it would be handy to have a car as a taxi there will be expensive. The Sheraton Hacienda del Mar is on the corridor between the two towns so you'll need transportation there and back, too. Has anything been said about the wedding guests transportation situation? Maybe a bus or vans are being arranged for? There is free parking at all the resorts.

Here's a map that you may find useful to get acquainted with the way things are laid out. When you open the map look at the center and find the Pueblo Bonito Rose. It's to the right of the ME and Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos. You can see that it is shaped like an upside down "J". Most of the studios are on the long right hand side and are situated sort of at an angle. Your view would likely be a partial ocean view or a nice pool view or it could be obstructed by palm trees. Getting as high up as possible might help the view.

You can move the map around. Move the map to the right (looking to the left of the Rose) so that you can see the marina and the Puerto Paraiso Plaza. That's the big mall and area adjacent to the downtown where you'll find the restaurants, bars, and clubs. It's an easy walk from the Rose.

If you move the map more to the right of the Rose and keep moving it along the coastline you'll come to the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar. It's just to the right of the Cabo del Sol golf course. You can zoom in and out of the map to get the names of the resorts & just put your mouse over them to get the names if they don't pop up automatically.

To find Sunset Beach, it's way left of the Rose. Keep moving the map to see the area along the coastline to the left and you'll eventually come to it.

you are the best Karen G! thank you so much for the map and info

I'm leaning towards the studio at the Rose now for our 1st trip, esp. with the little one

the ceremony is at the Church of Mission San Jose del Cabo Añuití so sounds like a rental car is in order since they don't have prearranged transportation.

will also probably be expensive taxi-ing everywhere (airport, church, reception, wal-mart/costco grocery trips, etc.)

any suggestions of renting a car at the airport or in town for a couple of days?

We used a private rental service--Dominic Los Cabos--a couple of weeks ago and it worked out great. His email address is domosanlucas@prodigy.net.mx . You can email him and get information as to the size and price per day.

His helper was waiting at the airport when we arrived. He brought the car up and helped load the bags into it. At the end of our week, we brought the car back and didn't have to fill it up with gasoline like rental agencies require. We parked it in the terminal parking lot, left the parking ticket and keys under the mat, locked the car, and left.

He'll drop off the car to the resort if you just want it for a few days and he'll pick it up wherever you want him to. He provides all the insurance you need. It would be worth checking with him as to his per diem charges and then you can compare it with the standard rental agencies.

The Walmart/Sam's Club complex is the best place we found for groceries that is very close to the Rose.

You'll want to take the toll road from the airport for the quickest route to Cabo San Lucas without having to drive through San Jose del Cabo. The toll amounts to about $2.80. I exchanged $10 for pesos (their minimum) at the airport to have enough to pay the toll. The rest of the time I just exchanged dollars for pesos at the front desk at the Rose. The rate was 12.5 and worth it for the convenience and no ATM fees. There is an ATM machine in a little booth right on site at the Rose.

There is also a shuttle service from the airport to the Rose and you can buy your tickets online from their website.

There are a few additional tips from our recent trip here.

Cabo Trip

Sounds like your going to have a car one way or other. Both resorts are very nice. When I stayed at the Rose last Nov. I really did miss Sunset Beach. Of course you realize with a new babe you will not be traveling about anything near as much as your used to right? You will be spending alot of time at the resort on the balcony, and by the pool. You will eat alot of meals in your room for the comfort and to keep the babe calm and on schedule, Both PB resorts have great room service. If your MIL can not go and you still want to take the babe The PB resorts have babysitting services that would be worth it for one day while you went to wedding and reception.
San Jose is a 45-60 minutes drive from Cabo or 30.00 cab ride each way, the cab rides are thrilling to say the least. It is an easy drive with a car, but remember you'll be tense because you won't exactly know where your going:doh: Truely I am not trying to be a killjoy I just want you to consider everything. Both PB resorts are super really. I would go with the resort that has the larger room. The one-bedrooms are fantastic at Sunset. I am sure you could request a certain building that would be more convenient to the lobby and parking because of the babe. We prefer building 19-20 on the top of hill because of the easy access to skypool easy walk downhill to lobby, tough walk back uphill. Great golf cart shuttle service. Sunset Sunset gets my vote especially if your looking for whales. That is where I saw mine the first week of Jan. at about 8am. It is hard to see whales in the bay as there is so much boat traffic the whales prefer the open pacific.

i'm not sure i'm replying in the right place, but here goes.
We stayed at a studio in the rose a couple of years ago and it was more like a nice hotel room. i don't really think an extra adult would work very well. you probably can request a floor plan from someone, but as i remember we entered and there was a bathroom then a small galley kitchenette then it opened into the bedroom area then some space and then the deck.
It was just the two of us and we didn't plan to cook much so it was fine for us, but if you take an extra adult it might be a little crowded.
the resort was beautiful and had immediate access to the beaches & restaurants. it was a short walk to the downtown area, so the location can't be beat. we're older, but the restaurants are lively and you'll probably enjoy them alot.
i've never been to the Sunset, but my sister stayed there and although it was probably nicer & newer, with a hottub on the deck etc. she said it's a little isolated.

I would take the one bedroom at PB Sunset. You are going to have to rent a car in any event so the one "drawback" of PB Sunset - that it is a little out of the way is really not a problem. In contrast, the space of the one bedroom and the amenities at PS Sunset will make up for the lack of location. You will use the car every day - sometimes twice a day. If you go to PB Sunset you can request a room near the top so you do not have to schlep baby stuff so much. I must say I am also biased because I own at PB Sunset. If you did not have a car, location might be important; with a car, go for the space and amenities. Funtime

PB Sunset

I totally agree that Sunset would be your best bet unless you can get a one bedroom at Blanco or Rose.

Thanks for all the info...we ended up confirming the studio at the Rose last week as our 24 hour hold was ending. since both resorts sounded nice, we liked the idea of convenience(for the baby) more so than the size

we will definitely spend some time at PB Sunset while we're there.

does anyone have any input on if I should buy the $69(RCI cancellation/transfer guarantee) in case a 1BR pops up at the Rose?

I haven't done this before so unsure what % that one will become available when I'm there

Seems like a good idea. I have never used the trip insurance so I don't have any personal knowledge of it, but maybe someone who has will chime in.

Also, keep an eye out for a one bedroom at the Blanco next door to the Rose. It's listed as Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos in RCI. It's a smaller resort, but still very nice. You can use all the Pueblo Bonitos when staying at any one of them and it's on the same safe Medano Beach as the Rose.

Maintenance fees come due at the end of this year, so maybe there will be some more owner deposits then.
