I will be heading up to DC for my friend's interment in Arlington next month. I have never been there on my own and need to know how to get around. I will be flying into BWI and have to get from there to Arlington without renting a car. I will be staying at the Inn Of Virginia on Lee Highway as I find it will be graduation week and reasonable hotel rooms are pretty much gone. I have, of course, checked on line but the public transit maps, especially involving transfers, are almost incomprehensible. Do any of you Washington hands have advice?

HVSTEVE,

WWW.HOPSTOP.COM Is your friend.

From the site's home page - input Washington, DC ( there will be a small box near the top that says 'change location' - click that hyperlink to go to the list that has all their different locations.)
great site to find out how to get from Point A to Point B
and gives you choices such as subway, bus, walking or combinations that you chose.

Also http:www.wmata.com/rail/maps/map.cfm is you friend. Interactive map of the Washington DC area Metro. If possible you want to get a Smart Card to make Metro traveling easier.

The primary options for connecting with Washington's Metro:
-- a shuttle to the train staion & MARC train into Union Station.
-- an express bus to the Metro's Greenbelt station.
The latter is the better choice... Union Station can be a zoo.

Either way, you're gonn'a need to switch Metro lines at some point:
Greenbelt: Switch from Green to Orange at L'Enfant Plaza.
Union Station: Switch from Red to Orange at Metro Center.
... Exit the Metro at either Clarendon or Virgina Square. Taxi from there.

I used to go to DC every week a few years ago. The Metro is one of the best in the world and easy to navigate.

Cheers

Also, if you are not familiar with the Washington DC Metro system - when you
look at the map to determine which Color Line to use and which stop to use to exit the train - let's say for example that you want to take the Blue Line - on the map, note the names of the stations that are the end of the Line; in this example it would be Largo-Town Center and Franconia-Springfield at the other end. Now, when you get to the train station and go through the turnstile, you will see posts with Station Names on them - the Station Names will be the Station that is the end of the Line and indicates in which direction the train will be going. So, again for this example, you see 2 sets of stairways leading down to the train platform. One stairway has a post that says Franconia-Springfield and the other stairway has a post that says Largo-Town Center. By knowing what exit station you want, you know which stairway to use. In many stations, they have sign-boards telling you how long you have to wait for the next train.

Now, go back and look at the Metro Map again. Note the Stations that have "Bullseye" circles. The Bullseye circle indicates that is a station where you can transfer to a different line (e.g. transfer from the Blue Line to the Red Line). The transfer is free and you don't have to go through another turnstile. Note, that at your entry station, money is not deducted at the entrance turnstile - rather, the money is deducted at your exit station turnstile. Also the amount of the fare is time dependent , and distance dependent. Maximum fares are for rush hour periods. If you or someone in your party is 65 or greater, they are eligible for a Senior Smart Card. Very worthwile to get as it saves 50% or more on the fare. For more info on this, chech the Metro website.

Have a great trip.

Richard

We just got back from Washington. I download DC Metro Transit app to my Android phone.

It has a system map, next train/bus finder, trip planner and nearest metro station features.

Since we were there for a week I via the Metro website, the 7 day unlimited metro passes. I think next time I will get Smartcards.
