YESTERDAY:
As you can see, been lurking here for a long time. Been to a half dozen presentations over the years (Sheraton / Westin) and had one yesterday for Abound MVC Points. We bought @1500 pts @ $15.94 per pt and a bonus 4k pts. See image below for offers. The final cost was $21,519 after new owner discount $1500 and $891 credit for our presentation stay (5 nts @ San Diego). We are going to rescind after giving it a good mental workthrough.

TODAY:
We enjoy Marriott (prior sheraton folks; now Lifetime Titanium w/Bonvoy). We had the cash for the package. We bought because we like flexibility of points (as retirees we can go anytime and on short notice). But mainly my wife was interested because they told us they're a month away from using points at hotels directly (instead of converting). They also told us that the Ritz yacht collection was coming to Abound soon and that interests us.

TOMORROW?:
We are now weighing the resale points option. But will resales have access to the hotels using points? We also like the last minute deals from II inventory so we are wondering if we should buy a small amount of points resale to become owners so we can rent points and join II in order to pick up deals here and there.

Given our situation: Any advice on how to proceed into first time ownership into MVC world?
Much appreciated!

First off, 1500 points isn't enough to reserve much of anything. Here is a points chart: https://vacationpointexchange.com/pointschart/points_charts_2026.pdf They sell these small points packages to get a foot in the door; once you figure out that 1500 points isn't enough, they will try to sell you more. (I suspect you got 3000 one time bonus points as part of your deal -- you should have -- so you don't figure out that 1500 isn't enough for a year or two.)

Second, you can buy points resale, as you already know. Why pay $15.94 when you can pay ~$6.50 resale, including Marriott's junk fees? If you decide to buy resale points, yes, you will be able to rent points from other owners and yes, you will have access to Interval.

Third, unless it is in writing, it isn't real -- such as using Abound points to reserve Marriott hotels.

Finally, MF's are too high on points. A legacy week is almost always less expensive to use (albeit less flexible).

We can be more helpful if you let us know how you intend to use points (where you stay, room size, etc.).

@SeanC You are on the right track. If a resale week doesn't work for you, such as you can't take a week long vacation or prefer shorter ones, then resale points is a good way to get into timesharing.

We've been hearing about the ability to use Club Points for hotel stays for years now. Nothing has changed and even if they implement something, it won't be a good use of points. Marriott Vacation Club doesn't own the hotels, so they need to convert your points to cash to book the hotel for you. There is really no such thing as using Club Points for hotel stays directly. On the back end they always need to do the cash conversion which is a large profit center for Marriott Vacations.

Definitely rescind following the steps laid out in your paperwork. Spend time learning about the various options including other systems. Then if it makes send, buy resale. For most resale weeks and exchanging with Interval is the best option. For others it's buying something they'll use most of the time. Access to points is unlikely to be wroth it going forward but if it is, going the resales weeks route is still the best option is almost every case.

We had the ability to use Club points for stays at certain hotels for a while now. The thing they're pushing is that it's going to be available for every hotel in the Marriott system. The current offerings are not a good deal when you figure out the cost of the club points and I don't expect that will change when they expand it to the full portfolio. I asked a sales rep why anybody would use Club points when it was so clearly cheaper to pay cash and they said some people have points they're trying to use up or more points than they can use. I'm not in that position to know but it doesn't seem like it would be quite that common.

If you are interested in hotels get a Bonvoy account and a Marriott Credit card and start earning Bonvoy points for hotel stays.
Abound points are too expensive to use on hotels.

Definately recind.

I suggest resend. Then tell your sales person to give you a call to revisit the deal once the program is in place to use the points directly for hotel stays. Methinks you'll never get that call.

Thank you all for the thoughtful responses! We are definitely rescinding.

We will take some time to figure out what we really want to do over the next 5 yrs+ for vacations and read up on the latest options. We really did want points for the flexibility--even if they're more expensive--but maybe a mix will work best: a low # of pts (1000) to be able to rent points plus a week or two to trade in and out of.

Cheers!
