Don't know if anyone has posted this before but I just decided to look this up because I have a Prescription that is very expensive. This was my findings:
Some companies offer discounts and discount cards on the internet. The expensive drug I use offers this. Instead of paying the high cost I spend only $20 for a 90 day supply.
What this experience has taught me is to check and of your prescriptions on the internet to see if you can get help paying for them. I have a prescription plan but under that plan I would pay much more then what I'm paying now.
Hope looking it up saves you money too.

Absolutely. Keep looking and keep asking. About 3 years ago I got one of the major banks to reduce the interest rate on a credit card from about 24% to 8%. It took somewhere between 8 - 10 phone calls and a lot of "no way" answers but eventually some one listened to my story and said "yes".

after my knee surgery I was looking for a pain pill with less side effects than the usual drugs

My doc suggested one that cost me $150 a week. (yes I was in pain) It worked but I needed more.

I called the drug company and got a code to give the drug store....$30

My wife takes a drug thats $10 a pill ...We called that drug company and got a deep discount there too, down to $4

I suggest also running medications through your insurance. For years we were paying Target $10-$20 for a three month supply for certain medications without insurance (their $4/10 drug plan). We changed to an HDHP with HSA and could have kept paying the $10-$20 but ran them through insurance and they were less than $2 a piece since our HDHP covers maintenance medications at 20% coinsurance with zero deductible.

Though even better, I am no longer taking any maintenance medications now that I have lost 130lbs

Great...but what drugs did you use? ;)

For those on a Medicare Part-D or MedicareAdvantage plan, you can call other plans that are available in your area to see if they offer your drugs at a lower cost. The plan I sell (Central, West, and South Florida) has free generic drugs, others are deeply discounted. Since you may not be able to change your plan now (except if you fit into any of the Special Election Periods), you can comparison shop.

Also, if you have less than $26000 in investments (primary home and car are excluded) and considered Poverty Level, Social Security can take away deductibles, greatly reduce copays, and even eliminate the Coverage Gap (aka Doughnut Hole). You can apply online at Social Security Extra Help. Your state may also have a prescription drug assistance program (some do, some don't).

Don't forget to check Costco mail order pharmacy. You don't even have to be a member. One of the drugs I use cost less for a 90 day supply through Costco than any pharmacy I checked both using the free discount cards or not (Walgreens, CVS, Safeway, Sam's club, Target, Walmart and 3 other local pharmacies).
