Going to China & Japan soon. Does anyone have any recommendations of power converters that actually work well?

Japan is the same as USA, and the diagonal blade adaptor for China is readily available on Amazon. Your devices are most likely able to handle the voltages in either country- to be sure, read the very fine print on your power blocks. Mine all say 115/240v input.

It depends. If you mean power socket adapters then any good travel store will be able to advise and supply the required adopters. However if you mean power converters then you may have issues. IT equipment like iPads and laptops can deal with a switch from 115 volts in the USA to somewhere using 240 volts but if you try to use a normal domestic appliance such as a hair dryer set for 115 volts in a 240 volt supply even using a power socket adapter you will burn out the hairdryer and possibly yourself.

You will want to look at each device and see if its dual voltage-like the others have said. It should say 110/240. (Most will in this day and age) If they don't, you need both adaptor and convertor.

My mother in law plugged a 110v extension cord into a 220v outlet in Phuket. Sparks flew. Literally.
