Is mailing a regular envelope with one piece of paper in it cost extra when mailing it from the US to Canada?

Yes, it's considered International mail. I think it's $.98 for the first ounce. You can calculate the exact US Postage on their site USPS dot com.

I send mail to my parents in Canada several times a year. I usually just slap two forever stamps on it and never had a problem. One time I forgot and only had one on it and it was returned, placed an additional forever stamp on and it went on its way.

First class mail to Canada for a standard business sized envelope with weight of one ounce is 75 cents. Thus, two forever stamps will suffice.

The cost for international mail varies by country and by weight.

Increasing the weight of that letter to Canada increases the cost:
- two ounces: $1.00
- three ounces: $1.25
