Have been hearing that the Poipu area got hit worse than Hanalei with all the rain. We drove by spouting horn and the bay where they take folks out for the sunset cruise.

Spouting Horn is spouting red from all the runoff, the bay is red in the vicinity, roads are flooded down by Breneke's.

They are constructing several shops and buildings down by the new traffic circle.

Trip down from Princeville went from white out downpours to fog, to clear roads and back again.

Amazingly lots of sun on the way back. On our vacation since the 6th we probably had 2-3 days at most that were sunny.

All the bad weather, the Pineapple Expresses, is what is causing all the snow and rain on the mainland. At least it is warm here but 62 degrees with a breeze in the morning is verging on chilly.

typical?

I know it is winter in Hawaii too, but is this degree/length of wetness typical? I'm getting worried for our trip mid-January. We were there in February the week before the damn broke and it was bad then. After that rain out week, I said that I would not return to Kauai again in January or February, but I guess I don't listen to myself much and want to get out of our cold weather more !!! And I've been also thinking about exchanging one of our Lawai weeks for a Cliffs, but am hesitant.

I'd like to hear from those who return year after year to learn if this is typical or not. Thanks.

Sterling I hope you have more time as the longer range is beginning to look somewhat better. see here http://www.hawaiiweathertoday.com/kauai.php

You know that the Cliff's Club is on the wetter end of the island, and LBR is on the drier end, right? If you are trying to avoid the rain, don't change your reservation.

The typical weather pattern where Princeville Hanalei gets more rain wasn't typical the last two weeks. All the storms were coming from the south so Poipu indeed got more water. But the whole island is soaked. There was one way traffic a couple of days on the highway between Kilaweah lighthouse and PV while road crews were digging out the drainage ditches.

I was on Kauai from 12/9 through 12/16 at the Point at Poipu. When the big gnarly storm rolled through we got 8 inches of rain at Poipu in less than 24 hours. Lawai Cove looked like tomato soup, and Sterling is right Spouting Horn was spouting red! I also heard on the news that a water spout/tornado touched down in Hanapepe just down the road from us during the same storm. We probably had an aggregate of about 8 total hours of sunlight. The snorkel gear never left it's bag. We were going to go whale watching but that was out too. My only reason for going in the winter is to see the whales. I much prefer summer and early fall. October is primo.

I am here right now in Marriott Waiohai Beach Club till 12/26. The weather is fine. No rain in Popiu but cloudy. The sun did come out in the afternoon for few hours. The resort is kind of quiet. IT is kind of surprising since this is a Christmas week.

I understand that the Kauai council is considering passing a law that no grading be allowed during the winter months because of red dirt run off. Action should be completed by 2020.

EPA fined Princeville Development for runoff a second time about $65K

What I saw down at Poipu should be fined about $650K--that red dirt sure isn't good news for the critters living on the ocean floor.
