I've just bought a Panasonic Vieta 50"1080p 600 hz Plasma TV. The salesperson suggested I get a professional calibration at $299. a couple of weeks after it is in my home. I thought it was a tad much, and didn't buy. I researched some on the web, and it seems like it might be a good idea.

Has anybody had it done by a licensed tech? Do you feel it is worth it?

TIA

Fern

I have been a home theater buff for many years. I own an expensive Plasma. I didn't bother with calibration because I don't think it is needed. My picture looks great to everyone who watches. Plasma is a fixed pixel technology. Calibration used to be more of an issue when people would use 3 gun crts. That technology is no longer used. IMO unless you have 300 bucks to throw away I wouldn't bother getting it calibrated. Most plasma tv's today come with pre-sets for movies and tv that do an excellent job. BTW Panasonic makes excellent Plasmas. The best in the business (since Pioneer stopped making them). Panasonic has great pre-sets.

I agree. $300 for a plasma cal is ridiculous.

Don't waste your money. It's not necessary. These days the picture should be perfect right out of the box. If the picture doesn't look right, send the unit back.

Cheers!

it might still be set up for store viewing right out of the box (i.e. with the color and brightness ramped up garishly high), so a little fiddling with the picture setting is probably a good idea...but it shouldn't take long to find a setting that makes you happy...

I've calibrated my plasma's in the past using different ISF approved methodologies and tools. However, technology has advanced pretty much to the state that most sets should look pretty good out of the box. The most important thing to look for is skin tone and shadow qualities, in my opinion. Most often, playing a reference BD disc is enough, and you can eyeball any adjustments made on the set.
