PayPal and renting a timeshare

If one uses PayPal to rent a timeshare, does that build in a safeguard in case it is a fraudulent rental?

I already checked to make sure that the person is the owner at this particular timeshare.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Paypal does not. But if you use a credit card and if there is a claim you want to make you can make it through your provider... They will deal with pay pal

Getting your money back however will be small consultation; if you find yourself in a strange town with no place to stay

Why not deal with someone you trust from the beginning and pay a little more to deal with an established company that comes recommended

PayPal does not allow technically rental payments, however lots of people still use it.

Historically, PayPal generally sides with the person who paid regardless of the dispute, so generally speaking it's easy to get your money back if you pay with PayPal.

I've paid for rentals many times with paypal but never disputed.

For clarification,I don't know the answer, does pal pal and or the cc protect you if you pay the balance more than 90 days before check in / the day you make a claim?

Paypal does not provide buyer protection for any type of real estate transaction, and they do classify vacation rentals as involving real estate. For vacation rentals, you are better served to pay directly with your own credit card or to use a verifiable third party escrow service to protect you. Be aware that even if you pay directly with your own card, there will likely be a window of opportunity to file a dispute. Most allow up to 90 days from time of payment. If your rental is further out than that- your dispute will most likely be rejected. If you read the PayPal terms and conditions, you'll find the following:

13.3 Ineligible Items. PayPal Purchase Protection only applies to PayPal payments for certain tangible, physical goods. Payments for the following are not eligible for reimbursement under PayPal Purchase Protection:
•Intangible items, including Digital Goods
•Services
•Real estate, including residential property
•Businesses
•Vehicles, including motor vehicles, motorcycles, caravans, aircraft and boats
•Custom-made items
•Travel tickets, including airline flight tickets
•Items prohibited by the PayPal Acceptable Use Policy
•Items which you collect in person or arrange to be collected on your behalf, including items bought through In-Store Checkout at the retail point of sale
•Items that violate eBay’s Prohibited or Restricted Items Policy
•Industrial machinery used in manufacturing
•Items equivalent to cash, including prepaid or gift cards
•PayPal Direct Payments
•Virtual Terminal Payments
•Personal Payments

Even if your payment is not eligible for PayPal Purchase Protection, you can file a Dispute and try to resolve the issue directly with the Seller; however, PayPal will generally not find in your favor if you escalate a Dispute to a Claim for an item which is not eligible for PayPal Purchase Protection.

What is Google Wallet? I have never heard of it. One of my renters wanted to use it today but I didn't know how it worked so I told her to just send a check.

I used to use Google wallet for one of my online retail stores. I haven't used it recently so things have probably changed, but it looks like you can still set one up... wallet.google.com. It's kind of like paypal.

To set up a merchant account you'd go here:

It depends upon how much you are spending and your associated traveling cost may be - but you may want something that provides assurance via an escrow service such that the landlord doesn't get paid until you've checked in. As long as you're willing to pay for the extra cost of the escrow service, the landlord should not object to it if they are legit.

You'll also want something from the resort that shows the reservation in your name, and you can call the resort to verify that the reservation is in your name.

I have to disagree on this point - many reputable owners do not accept escrow, because we are not willing to wait months for the money. I never accept escrow, and I know that many other Tuggers don't accept escrow either. If you have a good product for rent, you just say no thank you, and move on to someone who doesn't want to use escrow.

If you can, just use a credit card. You can at least dispute if something goes wrong. As Denise suggested follow the guidelines on the thread for renting.

Get a signed rental agreement. If you are sending a check you just have to have some level of trust. Make sure you get the confirmation in your name.

I have paid by check most of the time, as most timeshare owners do not have the means for credit card acceptance. At Home Away, I always use a credit card since they accept it as a form of payment.

I apologize. Denise is correct on this point and I worded it incorrectly. Obviously there are owners like Denise who are legit who won't accept escrow.
