I've searched the existing threads on this subject, and can't find a definitive answer.

Is one card, or the other, Amex SPG or Chase Marriott Rewards, more likely to produce the greatest number of Marriott Rewards points.

Thank you.

As stated above, the new CMR and AMEX are the same 6x, so no difference there.

If you have the old CMR, you get 5x, plus Elite nights for every $3K spent so in theory that could impact status, which would impact bonus points for stays, etc.

To put that last comment in perspective....if your maintenance fees are say, $10,000 with the OLD Marriott card you would get 50,000 points plus three elite nights, compared to the 60,000 points for the NEW card, but no elite nights. If you're trying to get the benefits at 50 and 75 nights, the former is better.

I agree with the info for fees. The SPG preferred and Marriott card are the same, the luxury card will give you an extra point on dining. From a point standpoint that's the only difference I can discern.

If you charge Harborside maintenance fees on SPG Amex, does it count as Marriott/SPG spend for extra points?

Hope so because I paid $6000+ last night on the card.

I believe it does...so long as Harborside is a participating resort. From what I have read in the Marriott and SPG card documents, I expect to get 6x rewards points when using my SPG Luxury card for maintenance fees at both Grande Vista and Westin Lagunamar. I sure someone here will soon report firsthand experience.

That's what I am not sure about. You cannot book Harborside on SPG/Marriott hotel website.

If I pay my lagunamar maintenance with Marriott chase card, do I get 2 points or 6?

Or Is it better to pay it with SPG Amex card ?

Based on past experience of mine and recent experience I have read on the forums, you would only get 2 points per $. You need to be using the Amex to get the 6 points per $.

Might be of interest that Chase pulled out of Canada a while ago and now Marriott only has the Amex SPG card here. The Marriott Visa Chase card did not have a currency exchange fee when paying maintenance fees and other USA charges...but the Amex card does!! Apparently 2% on top of currency differences...CDN dollar is only 76 cents now, so USA purchases are a big hit.

Does the USA Amex SPG card charge an exchange fee on foreign currency?

There is no Foreign Transaction Fee with the US-based SPG Amex card.
