Help!!! I am leaving for Germany on 4/8 and need to renew my passport BEFORE I leave. It expires on June 30th. What is the quickest/safest way to renew so I have it before my April 8th trip. I live in San Diego. Thanks!!!

Shouldn't be any problem.
From a current booklet I have:
Try most large Post Offices. Need it in a REAL HURRY? Expedited Service$60.00 additional, but you don't seem to be in that stuation.
Routine service is within 6 weeks.

You mail be able to do it by mail. FOrm DS-82 (White text on purple blocks).
(4) questions to be answered as yes or no as follows:
1. Can I submit my most recent US Passport?
2. I was at least 16 when my most recent US passport was issued?
3. Most recent passport issued less than 15 years ago?
4. I use the same name as on my most recent US Passport OR I have had my name changed by marriage or Court order and can submit proper documentation to relect my name change.
You will need two new photos.

If you answered NO to ANY question you cannot renew by mail.

You must then use Form DS-11 by making a personal appearance before a passport agent, POSTAL CLERK or clerk of the Court authorized to accept passport applications. (White text on orange blocks)
You will need two new photos.

Current Cost: $97.00 + any expedited services.

Try http://travel.state.gov or 1.877.487.2778

Even our local Post Office has a banner "Apply for Passports here".
Appointment necessary.

This should get you started.

Along the same line, anyone know what's the procedure to add extra pages to my passport? Mine won't expire until Oct. 2008 but I am running out of pages!

Actually the cost to renew is $67

The claim is that standard service is 4-6 weeks, but a coworker got hers in a little over 2 weeks. If you mail it immediately, you should have no problem getting it in time, without paying additional expediting fees.

Debra,
You're right. It is $67 to renew. Didn't see that in little booklet, but it on Mail-In form.

I just mailed my renewal in last week, and was scared at first since I thought maybe I had sent in the wrong amount and my passport would fall into a big black hole

After the 6 weeks went by, I called, and found out it would be another 4 weeks!!! Paid to expedite and it showed up within 4 days.

Point is, send it in, if it doesn't show up by the time you're getting itchy, pay to expedite.
