We are going to Europe this summer.....the expiry date on my passport is one month after our return date. The country that we are going to requires that the passport is valid for 3 months after the return date.
Would I be taking a chance if I didn't renew it before I leave?

You won't be allowed in.

You will probaly not be admitted. Actually the airline may not even let you on the plane.

The airline will not let you board, or you will be turned around at the border. The good news: renewal is much less than a new one: $67 iirc plus photos and turnaround is pretty quick, many are getting them in 10 days or less not expedited.

Since they are requiring it I think that means it is not negotiable.

From my experience, always take care of your passport issues at least 2 months before your trip.

I went to Canada (from the U.S.) during the spring of 2007, and it took me 5 weeks to get my passport renewed. If you're caught in a jam, you can pay an extra fee to "rush" it, which ends up being about $100 extra. I think the wait times are a little bit better now, but better safe than sorry!

At least the renewal process is a bit easier now and the wait times are indicated as only two weeks on the Canadian passport website. You don't need a guarantor any more, just a two page form, pay your money and you're done.

No question, renew now.

If you're planning Europe now, where do you plan to go in the next 10 years? Renew now for peace of mind on this trip and you can start planning your other international trips before you ever take this one.

Be glad you already know of this requirement. Knowledge is power. USE IT!

deleted. Oops! Didn't see that you were talking about a Canadian passport.

IMO, it's always better to be safe rather than sorry when it comes to passport or visa issues. My husband travels internationally very frequently for business, and over the years has traveled with colleagues who have been denied boarding at the destination airport, have been denied entry to the country to which they were traveling once they reached the immigration checkpoint, and have had stays limited to 24 hours because their visas were not exactly correct.

It would be awful for your trip to be canceled due to a technicality - better not to risk it.

We just sent in our renewals with the form we got from the Post Office that said the fee was $67. All our stuff was returned to us with a note that the fee was now $75, I think as of Feb. 1, 2008. So I've resubmitted it all again with new checks.

Our son's renewal had to be done in person at the post office since his last passport was issued to him when he was under 16. He got his new passport today and it was only about two weeks time and was not expedited. One other irksome thing was that we had gotten his two photos made at Sam's Club for $5 and the photo was the required 2" square. But his face was just slightly smaller that the requirements so we had to pay $10 for the lady at the post office to take the photo again. Plus the post office adds a $40 handling fee in addition to the Dept. of State fee. It's good for ten years, though, so at least it's all taken care of.

Thank you all for your advice and comments. I will take care of it right away..
I do have enough time before my next trip....I was hoping that I could actually make this passport last for 5 years...my next confirmed trip after my European vacation isn't until Jan. 31/09

Passports

About photographs: If you're a member of AAA (the Automobile Club) and have the upgraded membership then you are entitled to FREE Passport Photos.

Also, many of the United States Post Offices will handle initial applications and renewals, and some of them will also do photos for $15.

As an earlier post said, fees for applications and renewals did go up on February 1st, 2008.

Mid April thru Mid July are peak application times, so if you do want a Passport and want it to be turned around in a reasonable amount of time then you should apply within the next few weeks. Doing so now may help you avoid paying that high "expedited fee" should you be in a hurry to get it back (as they receive more applications their processing time will increase).

Hope this helps.

Enjoy your trip!

Oops.

OP is Canadian. Their passports last 5 years, not 10, and cost CDN $87. Sorry for the confusion.

Jim

You must have the required time remaining on your passport or the likelihood is that the airline won't allow you to fly anyway. They could be hit with a fine of several thousand dollars if you are refused admission to a country on landing.
I don't know if it's true of Canadian passports, but if you renew a passport in the UK with less than a year (I think that's the timescale) to run, that will be added to the new passport i.e. your new one will run for 11 years so you don't lose out.

Keith....with Canadian passports....the expiry date is exactly 5 years from the date of issue, therefore we always end up losing each time we renew.
In my case, I will lose 4 months on my current one....so therefore our passport really isn't effective for 5 years.

Received my new passport today....it took less than 3 weeks by using the mail system. Now I am all set again for another 5 years....or maybe 4 1/2 depending on the destination. It would be nice if somehow the balance of what is left on the old passport could extend the new passport....we end up losing years with the way the system is set up.

I'm pleased to read that you have your passport sorted. Where are you visiting in Europe?

While we are on the subject of passports, I'll switch gears to the subject of US passports. On Monday, March 24 we applied for a renewal of my 14 yr old's passport at the local post office, regular application with no rush. Received it in the mail on Tuesday, April 2. Received his birth certificate and old passport the next day, Apr. 3, but still haven't received his passport card. We applied for the new passport card thinking that we could use it as an ID for him until he gets a driver's lic.

Keith...we will be spending 2 weeks in the Netherlands ( my birth country) in June. We have exchanged with RCI into a 3 bedroom house at Hoog Vaals, near Maastricht. The second week we have a 3 bedroom house at the Coldenhove timeshare in the province of Gelderland. Both of these are in Landal Park....I am not quite sure what to expect.
Next March we have 2 weeks confirmed at the Anfi Beach Club, Gran Canaria.
I love Europe.....it is in my blood.
