Hi all, Ok I know this resort has been discussed in the past. Since I am now interested in perhaps vacationing there with my family I would like to know what you all think about this resort. We are a family of four, parents with two teenagers. how are the units? How is the fitness facility at the resort? Is the beach nice? Are there any activities teens would be interested in? Thanks, Sue

Sue,
I can help with two of the items you asked about. 1. The units are beautiful with Gulf views you won't be disappointed. 2. the beach is beautiful and the sand squeaks under your feet. It is called sugar sand.

I don't have teen, but there is shopping near the pier, and the beach and the pool area should occupy them some. We did not use the gym, swam at the beach.

I hope this helps.

Don

I am typing this while sitting in a one bed room deluxe room at the Panama City Wyndham. This is a really nice resort. All rooms have ocean front balconies. There are two pools. One is ocean front and is supposed to be for adults but some parents can't seem to get it and bring kids here. There is another 2 pools across the street that is for families. It has a hot tub too and one of the pools is a kids pool with buckets that fillup and spill on the kids along with other kid features.

There is a Tiki bar by the adult oceanfront pool that serves drinks all day and into the night. There is a Starbucks on site. There is a walkway that crosses the steet where the parking garage is to connect you to the towers which overlook the ocean. On the skywalk is a bar called the Skybar where there are many flat screen TV's and there are windows allowing you to watch the traffic while relaxing and enjoying adult beverages.

The fitness facility is top notch. There are about 10 treadmills and elyptical machines, and each has it's own flat screen TV on the wall right in front of you to watch as you exercise. There are several Cybex machines including a chin/dip machine. There are bench press, leg press, curl, lat pulls, etc machines. It is one of the top fitness rooms of any resort I have visited.

The units are fantastic. This resort was built in the last 5 years and everything is new. it has granite counter tops, ceramic tile floors, washer/dryer in my unit and in all 2 bed units, flat screen TV's, everything you could want is here.

As far as what to do with teenagers, whatever you want to do you can do. At the resort the kids can rent sea doos to ride in the ocean. they can Parasail right in front of the resort leaving from the beach. You can rent chairs and umbrellas by the day or week. Within a mile or two of here are several putt putt courses, arcades, more championship golf courses than you can play in a week, movie theatres, a giant shopping, touristy, eating, walking complex called Pier Park built and opened in the last 4 years ( http://www.panamacitybeachonline.com/PierPark/ ), scooter rentals, pontoon boat rentals, etc, etc, etc. There is a gulf world aquarium which has dolphin shows, animal shows, aquariums, etc. There is a local zoo. There is a water park. There are even bars/night clubs that let teenagers in without allowing them to drink, but I would not send my teenagers there. Panama City, Daytona beach, and Cancun are the three areas where MTV sets up for spring break every year. What place is more for teenagers? The great news for parents is that the main teenage area where they film girls gone wild is several miles up the beach from this resort. You must be at least 24 to check in here, so the teenagers here are mainly with parents.

The beach is the best. The trip adviser readers poll 2011 ranked Panama Citry neach as the top rated beach in Florida, the second highest rated beach in the entire USA, and ranked it the number 12th best beach in the world.

I am here on exchange and I HATE to make it harder for me to get an exchange here in the future, but I must be honest and tell you that this is a fantastic place to spend a vacation.

I'm really excited, booked a week in August. Not that I like to go to florida in the summer, but between school and sports schedules this was the only week we could go. We got a two bedroom presidential suite. We have never been to this part of Florida and would welcome suggestions on restaurants. I reserved a rental car and it seems the rental lot is right at the airport. Is this correct? If so is it set up like it is in Orlando? Any additional comments would be welcome. Thanks, Sue

Firefly is currently the number one rated fine dining restaurant in PC. President Obama ate here when he was in the area last August. The She Crab soup is the best I have ever had. We went during the early bird and 2 eat a 3 course meal for $39.95. She crab soup followed by main course. I had Tuna, wife had tenderloin medallions, and hers were the best. Get those medallions if you are getting the 2 for deal IMO. Dessert I had cheesecake and wife had creme brulet, and both were great. They have been rated the only golden spoon award winner on the panhandle. You can make reservation on line on this web site.

Salt Water grill is another great fine dining place. They have early bird specials are only $14.99 until 5:30 pm and it is great food. I had shrimp fettuccini and wife had Prime rib. Both great. This was voted the number one seafood restaurant last year in the local newspaper's readers poll. You MUST ORDER the firecracker shrimp appetizer. I wish they had it as a main course option because i would order it for my meal every time. The 25,000 gallon aquarium is beautiful and several nights a week there is a piano player/singer. A very romantic place. You can make reservations on line on this web site too.

Number one seafood restaurant in PC for decades as ranked by Southern Living etc, etc, etc for years is and always has been Captain Andersons. Everything they serve is great. There is usually await for a table but you can walk around and look at the boats while you wait.

For lunch my favorite place is Schooners. It is open air and beach front. Get a atable oceanfront with the breeze blowing your hair as you look out over the turquoise water and enjoy. Check out the photo gallery or the live cams. Yes the sand is that white and yes the water is that blue green color.
I always eat here one day for luch. I love the grouper sandwich, the Greuben, and the grouper plate. Also they have really good onion rings, fried crab claws, and fried green tomatos.

If you like raw oysters Hunts is a dive and the best in the area. $4.75 a dozen raw!!! Get them steamed, baked, 3 cheese, cajun, 3 cheese jalapeno, any way you like them. The sandwiches are good, the fried pickles, the fried shrimp, everything. Unlike my other listings this place is notfancy, does not have a great view, but it is wonderful. Ate my last meal in PC yesterday for lunch. had 2 dozen raw and a mini seafood platter. Wife had fried shrimp. It was great as always. There is usually a line to get a table and it is mainly locals. If you like great food for good prices and odn't mind a dive, this is the place!!!

There are many other great places to eat. There is Bonefish grill which is a chain but very good. Jimmy Buffetts Margaritaville in the Pier Park shopping complex. There is a place called the Back Porch also in Pier Park. There is Sharkys, Shuckums, Spinnakers,Pineaplle Willies, Pompano's, Boar's Head, etc, etc, etc. The ones I referenced are my favorites but by no means the only great places to eat in PC. Enjoy. You will be back.

Don't know if the ride is scenic or not but here's what the Wyndham website says about the mileage between Panama City and Orlando...Also the closest airport information...

Mileage between Wyndham Vacation Resorts Panama City Beach and...
Destin, FL: 43 miles
Atlanta, GA: 296 miles
New Orleans, LA: 315 miles
Orlando, FL: 383 miles

Nearest Airports
Panama City - Bay County International Airport: 12 miles
Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport: 13 miles

Also, there does not seem to be any nonstops from Newark or surrounding NY airports to these airports...I also checked Philly and no nonstops but the prices were lower for the timeframe I searched. I looked up the flights on sidestep.com. The only airline I didn't check was Southwest...that has to be searched from their website.

It is not a scenic drive to orlando, but it is not miserable either. Mainly rural with woods and cows. 6 hours or less depending on your driving speed.

Sothwest Airlines flys into Panama City. They typically have cheap fares and are hard to beat.

Here is a list of airlines and rental cars at the Panama City airport:
