(Edit, I guess what I am calling HVC should be bHC? )

Ok, had my long awaited owners update at the Hilton Club sales office on W57th. If I get some facts or amounts wrong, I apologize in advance as I still have some COVID brain from my early Christmas present of a case of Covid.

Background: Why am I here on New Year’s Eve? Not my choice, but DW wanted to be in NYC on NYE sometime, so I had booked a hotel room about 10 months ago. We are about a 3hr train ride away, so not a huge ordeal to get here. I wanted to get this boxed checked so I don’t have to do this again.

Was an expensive room, and not that great a hotel, I believe it was a Double Tree midtown?

Then maybe about a month after booking, I got one of those “2 nights stay at any Hilton property for $149, no blackout dates, extra charge for specific high times such as NYE” calls. Right before saying “no thanks”, I then remembered the expensive meh hotel booked for NYE. I then inquired about NYC NYE, how much more would that be. I think it ended up being close to $500 something for 2 nights, NYC NYE, and 75,000HH points for a 1hr owners update. I said yes, as that one night at the hotel was something like $650.

(Ended up being 2 nights at the Hilton midtown)

11am appointment for the 1hr owners update on Dec 31.

Show up at the lobby at 142 W57th at about 10:55. Get ushered up right at about 11:00.

The “parting gifts” /check-in desk is right there when you get out of the elevator. Checked in, and the employee at the desk told me “the agreed on presentation bonus is 75,000 HH points?” “Yes” “Ok, they will be on your account by tonight “. (They have already been added to the account when I just checked a minute ago).

While waiting for our sales agent, another couple checked in and I overheard the same 75000HH point deal.

Our salesman came and got us at around 11:10. “Eric”, Self described as a senior salesman.

So I was wondering what the angle would be. For disclosure, we own HGVC Elara platinum 2BR, 13,440 annual pts.

He asked how we use our points, and if we are satisfied. I said yes, once we figured out how to best use the system.

“I sell for HGVC, HVC, Max, and I can see that what I can offer you as an improvement. Adding and getting more HGVC to get elite won’t get you that much (the angle I was anticipating). Well, here’s what I can give you, I can get you into the exclusive HVC, 11,400pts, 32:1 HH conversion rate, and lower MF of $950(?), but this gets you into the Club properties, as well as all the HGVC properties you already access now all this for trading in your deed and $24,700, and you will be in the club”.

“Eh, we’re pretty satisfied with what we have now.”

“Where have you used your points for?”

“Hawaii, LV, sometimes RCI for a few different places “

“Oh, Hawaii, and RCI….OK, I can tell the type of accommodations you are into” with a sort of condescending glimmer in his facial expression. He was offering us access to the high end exclusive club, but we were obviously not of the caviar class, but the lower fried chicken HGVC ilk.

11:20, left and sent in the closer at about 11:30.

A 11,400pt package good for 18 months, and keeps the prior offer alive, for $1495(?).

“No thanks”

Out at 11:35.

Yes, bHC or aHC or just HC.... Hilton Club. HVC is Diamond.

Sounds like you did a good job of keeping it short. Too bad the condescending tone.... You won't make a sell that way.

I wonder if the sales people read this forum. Condescending seems to be the number 1 complaint from everyone that attends one of these. Also being in sales myself I know the condescending tone gets you nowhere fast.

I thought about this some more and was thinking as people no matter the circumstances we don’t like to be talked to in a condescending tone or manner. We have opted to go to sales presentation, yes the majority of us are there for the free reward but that still doesn’t give the green light for that behavior. They are selling a lifestyle or luxury depending on what side of the table you’re on. It’s not cheap to get into no matter how you buy. If you want me to spend thousands of dollars with you then you better not be a a$$hole. Maybe I’m telling you no so you can get to the better offers I know you have up your sleeve. Just some thoughts I’d come up with…

I have attended many presentations. Pressure and sales tactics, yes. We had one in which the rep was indignant that we attended multiple VIPs as that was only intended to be purchased once. Ha ha. But I don't recall any that were condescending. I tend to ask a lot of questions because I am truly curious about what is new (my bad because it eats time). I think that wears them down. We are polite and say that we are happy with what we own and what they are offering is "not a fit for us."

We stand up when our time is up to indicate that we are done. You get what you give.

Did you even consider the 11.400 point offer? We had something like that after our first go in and say no meeting. We thought about it afterward and are still wondering it is a good way to increase our point a bit have another deed or MF.

No, I’ve never taken the bite on the vip offer package. It’s not as good as my MF/point cost of my Elara deed.

That being said, it may be of some value if you want to try some properties before buying (resale) and you are low in points. Just be aware of the limitations of the package, which they will likely gloss over in the meeting.
