Owner Status when purchasing points in the secondary market

Thinking about joining the fun at MVC. Went to a presentation and was told that joining via the secondary market would not allow me any of the owner status benefits that go with my point level (Presidential in this case), and that only points purchased from Marriott qualified even after paying the $3/pt junk fee. I have heard otherwise many times on this forum but realize that things can change. Has anyone recently done an initial points purchase in the secondary market and been denied the benefits that the purchase level afforded?

Very simply, you get ALL of the benefits of a Marriott owner’s status once you pay that $3 per point junk fee. Disregard the “misinformed salesperson.
