We have never been to the OBX, but are currently hoping to go this coming September.

So, wondering what the weather will be like, if swimming in the ocean is still a reasonable option, if restaurants and attractions are beginning to shut down for the season, etc.

Also, what are some 'nicer' resorts to keep an eye out for or, conversely, what resorts should be avoids at all costs? Don't need anything fancy, just a solid base of operations where we can cook most of our meals and relax by the pool.

TIA for any and all suggestions

Early Sept yes for swimming, late Sept.. maybe. Early Sept is height of hurricane season. Otherwise, it's still hot thru about 9/15, lovely later in Sept.

September in North Carolina is lovely. You skip the oppressive heat. The water is still lovely that time of year.

Everybody mentions hurricanes for the Atlantic and Caribbean in the fall. Its a risk, but the chance of getting tagged at a specific spot on any given year, let alone a specific week, are very low. Compared to other natural disasters, hurricanes at least have the courtesy to give you advance notice.

I live on an island in the Atlantic and have experienced more than one hurricane.

Agree with all points. The big thing in addition to the weather is that the crowds are gone and it is much easier to get into restaurants, etc. None of the timeshares are great in terms of being fancy, but none are bad either. I would focus on ocean front. On the other hand, you may find that renting outside of the timeshare space may be a bargain. Prices drop off right after Labor Day

Exactly! We went to the Outer Banks one year with check-in on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend. By mid-afternoon on Labor Day, we had the island to ourselves. Restaurants hadn't closed yet.

Late August might be another time to look since so many districts start school in mid- to late-August.

Booked Beachwoods for Sep 20

Plan on doing lots of beach walking, hiking and maybe biking if we can find some rentals
More suggestions welcome!

Do not miss the Wright Brothers Museum. It's easy, fun, and fascinating.

Big Matt, post is right on the money.
Beachwood Resort is a nice resort. It is about 2 miles from the beach. It is near a Super WalMart.

Please check OBX Ten Days weather forecast before you travel

To the OP, there are some reviews on the TUG Reviews Section and there are some recent reviews on TripAdvisor website on this resort .

Please enjoy your vacation time on OBX.

Outer bank in fall after schools are in are the best.. weekends will be busy Fri afternoon to sunday early afternoon but the rest of the week the place is quiet. Water will be nice and warm, sun will be out most days. waves will be somewhat tame vs winter .. enjoy and have fun.

At least plan on a day to drive south through the national seashore. Once you cross the Oregon inlet you are in whole different world. If you want to make it a long day of it go all the way south and take the Ocracoke ferry and sight see and have lunch down there. If that is too far at least make to Cape Hatteras. You can stop at turn offs and go to the beach. There are places to eat along the way.
