Options to trade up at Marriott?

We just bought a 1 bedroom at Maui Ocean Club. We want to trade to Aruba in 2007 with another couple. Is it possible to trade to a 2 bedroom? Can I use points to upgrade? How does it work?

You need to be a member of II or an independant exchange company or consider a direct exchange with an Aruba owner.

If you choose II, you will probably get an AC (Accomodations Certificate) for your Maui deposit (seems to be the most highly requested resort in II for Marriott's). If you join II, you have 2 options, 1) Request first (AC's are not usually given in this case) where you would not deposit your week until you have gotten what you want, or 2) Deposit first where you deposit your week and either pick current inventory or select an ongoing search for what you want.

Hope this helps.

Right now I am only seeing efficiencies in Aruba for Marriott's for 2007, but you can put an ongoing request in for another 1bd, but I believe it has to show available in order to get a 2BD for a 1Bd unless it is within the 60day flexchange period.

If you exchange through II, you will only be able to trade for a "comparable exchange". According to II, that means that your 1BR usually won't pull a 2BR, except (1) at resorts that have only 2BR (or larger) units or (2) within the last 60 days before your hoped-for check-in date (as potchak indicated).

Thus, since the two Aruba Marriotts have 2BR, 1 BR and studio units, it's unlikely that you'll get a 2BR for your 1BR, unless you snag one during that last 60 days.

There is no way to get a 1BR and upgrade it to a 2BR through II or Marriott.

An alternative, if you are able to trade for a 1BR, is to rent a studio - through Marriott or more cheaply on the open market - and ask Marriott to put them together as a single 2BR unit, as discussed here.

The other alternatives are to try for a direct exchange with another owner through www.ownertrades.com or to use one of the small independent exchange companies.

Dave - Is that rule effective only when placing exchange requests? I know I've been able to upgrade routinely via the II website and received two and three bedroom selections for my lockoffs.

Instead of renting an efficiency, you may try to get the efficiency with your AC. Unlikely, but worth a look-see.

You can exchange for a larger unit if it shows for instant confirmation. However you cant put in an ongoing request for a larger unit than you deposit. It is unlikely that you will see a two bedroom Aruba Marriott unit available for instant confirmation except within the 60 day flexchange period or possibly during the month of September.
