Looking for flights from either Detroit/Toronto or Buffalo to St.Thomas USVI. Any good stories out there about good rates. It will be Presidents week 2010.

American Airlines, Northwest and Spirit Airlines fly out of Detroit to St. Thomas. You might get a good deal out of Spirit Airlines. They used to be good in the past but became subject to an increasing number of customer complaints that did some serious damage to their reputation over the last couple of years. You won't get a direct flight out of Detroit to St. Thomas as far as I know so you will have to be prepared for a stopover in either Atlanta, Miami or Puerto Rico. It will be difficult to get pricing or schedules for President's week 2010 this early out, but if you go to the DTW airport website you can check the various Airlines and see what their current 2009Presidents week schedules are like to at least get an idea of which airlines fly to St. Thomas via which hub airports.

We have flown from Buffalo to San Juan Puerto Rico-you can then take a small puddle jumper to St.Thomas.* I think SW flies to SJ.

Southwest doesn't fly to San Juan. You can probably get to San Juan from Buffalo using Continental, US Airways, Northwest, United, or American Airlines but to get to San Juan you will have to change planes somewhere in the southeast US no matter which carrier you choose.

FWIW we flew USAirways from YYZ to St Thomas with a connection in Philly - very early flight from YYZ, then a short layover in Philly then a non stop to St Thomas. On the way back the plane stopped in St Croix, then Philly for a plane change then into YYZ.

I'm always a wee bit leary of booking this far ahead these days - especially directly through the airline - if I were going to book this early, I'd go through a travel agent and have cancellation insurance - then if the airline goes bust at least you have protection and someone knowledgble in your corner to find another way there.

BTW I believe US Airways is a points partners with Air Canada for Aeroplan if that makes a difference.

I wouldn't book any flights b4 six months out at the earliest, insurance or no. Its good to get an idea of who flies there and track fares -- I'd use a fare tracking service (online agencies and some airports offer them). But IMO, actual flights will change substantially between now and then. Some will disappear entirely and others will be added. Almost certainly, you will find your times and possibly, your connections changed.
