One night stopover at SFO. Things to do and hotel recommendations, please.

I agree. That's why I preferred these rooms, too. But they don't any any charm that the previous poster mentioned - that's just in the old rooms.
I will give up tne old charm for the larger, quieter rooms with a view.

I've made some decisions and have everything booked.

For the 1 night on the outbound I chose the Westin SFO because of the pool. No lounge but free breakfast. We'll probably find someplace for dinner anyway. Didn't want the expense or trouble to go into the city. Was able to use a FNC + 10K points. However, on the return I was able to use my Hyatt points at the Hyatt Centric Fisherman's Wharf for 4 nights before returning home. I've reserved a rental car so we can explore. Booked our Delta flight home to DTW using Air France miles for half of what Delta was asking.

For your day near SFO, there are many great restaurants in Burlingame, CA on Burlingame Ave or Broadway. If you rent a car for that day, you can drive out to Half Moon Bay. If not, walk or bike along the Bay Trail and watch planes land.

Has anyone looked at the Vacation Club property? TheRitz isn't available during our dates.
.
The SF MVC is perfectly fine but nothing exceptional. And the rooms with two doubles are a little tight but the king rooms perfectly acceptable.

Basically, we stayed there one weeknight because we needed three rooms and the rates at ‘normal’ hotels were exorbitant and the MVC a steal by comparison.

Dinner in North Beach and a show at Club Fugazi?

Check in and take a nap.

Does anyone have suggestion for the best way to visit Muir Woods? We will have a car and I can see that reservations are needed. I also see various tour packages that include Salsilito

If you can't get in at Muir Woods, SP Taylor is an alternative to see the redwoods. $8 for a car entry. Easy hike along the creek, ruins of an old saw mill.

My daughter and I had dinner at Trattoria Contadina, then walked to Club Fugazi to see "Dear San Francisco". So much fun.

We are in the area often. Have done Muir Woods, Sausalito, the wharf etc. I really enjoy the Ritz at half moon bay. The views are fantastic and they have fire pits going most of the year. Sit and watch the ocean and have a delicious cocktail or snack. We leave soon for the area. Be glad to leave 12 degree weather. The wineries nearby are fun too with beautiful views! Can see the Apple building from high while sipping on wine. No need to do the long drive to Napa.

Of course if you love food and cooking try to get reservations at Alice Waters restaurant. It is a charmer even for lunch.

WayMo to/from Coit Tower for views and Diego Rivera murals.
Irish Coffee at The Buena Vista and Cable Car Ride to/from Union Square.
MVC-SF is walking distance to The BV. We have stayed at the MVC-SF a couple of times. Good location.
Fisherman's Wharf and G Square are walking distance - also check out Mechanical Musee at Wharf (antique penny arcade).

There are two Alice Waters restaurants in Berkeley. Chez Panisse, which is a fixed menu and the more casual cafe, there are on the same property. We never ate there even when living in the SF Bay Area as we knew the fixed menu would never work for all of us. Should have tried the cafe though.
