I thought there used to be 5 royals. We stayed in 2 of them. Nice, but not quite a match for Westin Lagunamar.

There was Royal Mayan, Caribbean and Islander. All sold off. There is still Royal Sands( just down from Lagunamar) and Royal Cancun closer to downtown.

We prefer Lagunamar also

There is also the Royal Haciendas south of Cancun, but I have no idea who runs or owns it now.

I would think it is now owned by Holiday Inn Club Vacations (Orange Lake) as they bought Royal Resorts a year or so ago.

IMHO The Royal Sands is much nicer than Westin Lagunamar. The beach is larger with many more palapas that are spread out. Their on site market is nicer, the gym is better. The 2 bedroom villas are larger. Each to their own. FYI we also own 3 weeks at the Marriott Aruba Ocean Club and 1 week at Marriott's Surfwatch.

there are +/- to both. Washer and dryer in all units at Lagunamar (great for extended stays) as well as cushioned pool loungers and gas grills. We like both resorts. I wish I could combine the best features of both.

For exchangers like myself, the Royal sands is AI mandatory. That is a deal breaker for me.

Deal breaker for us too. It seems that most Mexican Resorts are mandatory AI to ex-changers.

Back in the day, pre Westin Lagumamar, these were the best non AI resorts in Cancun. I spend many a school break visiting.
Caribbean, the one in the middle, was our favorite. Great large balconies and fabulous views.
