The world is over populated. There hasn't been a world war or a true pandemic that radically reduces population - combine this with ever expanding medical knowledge and capabilities - people are living longer than ever.

The problem is that the most vulnerable/poorest people are usually the ones who are producing the most children - many times they are producing children for labor or to sell. That might sound like a horrible thing to say - but it iscommon in India/Pakistan. I am sure elsewhere - where there are large swaths of poverty.

We need smaller populations because the world is changing - resources are becoming scarcer and technology eliminates the need for workers.

This could be a very divisive topic.

My grandparents birthed nine kids. My parents had five. I had two. I see a trend here.

However we need more young citizens to support us in our older years

There are plenty enough resources for our global population. The poverty is a result of the minority that figured out how to own these resources to control the majority. Yes, the world is changing but it is always changing.

I'm in agreement with the be fruitful and multiply mandate. At 65 I have three great grandkids and eight grandkids with a shot at more in the next twenty years. I found satisfaction and happiness in my work but I found way more in my family .

Yes there are those that believe in the fruitful and multiply dealio. In the end I think it's a good thing to be fruitful. However for the modern middle and lower class it's an economic challenge.

It's definitely a challenge when you are young. It was for us and looking back on those days makes me smile. Its like the lyric "you have to pay your dues if you want to play the blues and you know it don't come easy".
