September should be NICE; less crowded.

Ogunquit is nice---walk the quaint downtown, and the shoreline.
We used restaurant.com for Bintliffs, that was pretty good.

Drive to Portland, and walk the Old Port---eat somewhere there.

If you like baseball----perhaps get tickets to a Sea Dog game, pretty much every seat is a good one.

Are you a golfer? If so, use golfnow, and play Old Marsh in Wells (or google Harris Golf).

LL Bean is in Freeport.

Have FUN!!!

The water is always cold I assume, but I bet the beaches will be nice and empty. Might be great in Sept. with sunny weather.

You could go kayaking also.

Just some random suggestions from a previous visit to the area: Visit Kennebunkport area, scenic & interesting (but expensive) shops. The Sea Shore Trolley Museum (closed while I was there but looked interesting). A trip to Portland; small city but nice day trip. Nice art museum, lunch at Duckfat (expensive but delicious) small & usually a wait, try & eat at an off time. Grab some baked goods from Standard Baking Co.
Got some good bargains at the LL Bean "complex" in Freeport.
