We depart the Big Island today after a wonderful week at the HGVC Waikoloa. Checking in to Kauai Lagoons this afternoon. Now I get to see for myself if it lives up to it's hype :D

Enjoy, I am sure no matter what, you will have a great time!

Have an awesome time!! Once you get into the Lagoons area, follow the Kalanipu'u signs.. it's a long and windy road back to the resort! Also, make sure to follow the directions with the glass wall doors.. we saw maintenance helping several folks with doors that didn't look correctly used. Enjoy!! :)

Dioxide,

Have fun in Kauai and tell us what you think of the property!

How did you like the Big Island and the HGVC properties?

Best,

Greg

great finishes

We spent a night there during a recent trip to Kauai, and those units were really nice. A bit too far from the beach for me to want to spend any length of time there, but the finishes and views were great. Enjoy!

Dinner Suggestion

Make a reservation and see the sunset at The Beach House, about 40 minute s away in Poipu by the Spouting Horn. It's the most romantic spot for sunset in Kauai!:)

good morning...

Dioxide....

you will love KL... keep us posted...

Well, we have made it. Checked in last night in the pouring rain. Though woke up to wonderful sunny (but windy) skies. We were assigned a second floor in building B. We reserved a 3BR IV with DC points. We ended up in the closest 3BR to the end of the building closest to building A. I don't think there is a bad view in this place. All units would have a spectacular view. Took a quick walk around the property this morning. I will say that the pool water is a lot warmer here than it was last week at either the HGVC or Hilton hotel pool. They don't seem to heat their pools over there.

We had a great week at the HGVC property. Thanks again Greg for your help with this. From what we can see of Kauai so far, the Big Island is a far different place. We definitely enjoyed our week there and while the Hilton properties are a little removed from the action of Kona, they are a great place to spend a week.

Thanks for the update, Dioxide. We check into KL this Saturday evening for a week...can't wait!!!

Yes I bet the "quick walk" didn't take too long there :) Once decent thing we found were the free bikes available outside the desk in building C. I think you are supposed to check them out and get a helmet from the front desk, but some folks just seemed to get on and ride away. There are 4 bikes in the rack. They will also give you a map of a loop around the golf course and by the airport. Be advised it's a nice ride BUT the bikes aren't geared so get ready for some heavy duty pedaling in a couple stretches :)

Holy cow Dioxide, nice Island View room!

Note to self....don't get the OF....get the IV...

Have fun in Kauai! I'm glad you liked the Big Island!

Best,

Greg

Wow, that is spectacular. It will be hard to leave the lanai

View is important

What a stunning view you have, dioxide. :D Do you spend time on your lanai because of it?

Have a great time on Kauai as it is so different from the Big Island so seeing them both is the way to go.

Wishing you good weather too.

We have spent more time on the lanai than we usually would. The view is great and the fact that the patio door opens up completely to the inside.

I don't like the setup of the doors here as much as the ones at Marco Island. The ones here seem much more fragile and more difficult to open and close. They look like they get a lot of abuse from people not using them correctly. One other issue I have is a lack of lights on the lanai. Just two small dim ones. Though Marco was the same due to turtle nesting.

What Else Was Planned at Kauai Lagoons?

The view from the resort is rather interesting and leads to some other questions. What else was planned for Kauai Lagoons? Perhaps bigger plans overall. In the distance you can see what appears to be two structures that construction has halted on. Below the resort is the road to nowhere. Though buildings were obviously planned there because there are fire hydrents. Any thoughts on what there were to be?

Those pilings were for Ritz Carlton destination club. We took a tour of them probably around 2007/2008 when real estate began to crash. The original building is now the Kauai Lagoons preview center (converted to a sales center) and the golf pro shop. My understanding is that project has been scrapped but maybe it will be resurrected now that real estate is heading back up.

Interesting. So the resort that is now what we know as Kauai Lagoons was initially sold then as a Grand Residence by Marriott and not a Ritz Carlton Residences?

Yes I believe they only sold 2 or 3 units under the GR name.. and those residents still own in Building A. I think they have the "reserved" parking spaces you see in the lot up there. The original site plan had single fam residential in the street below KL and behind it as well. You can see the driveway starters in the roadway. Big bucks I'm sure :)

Incredible island view... That's as good as the most of the better ocean view category rooms at the Waiohai (I'm suffering with a little view-envy, lol). I will definitely have to add on some nights there next time we are in Kauai. Thanks for sharing!

Great pictures! Can't wait to hear a full report on your impressions. We love, love Kauai!!!

applegirl :D

Well, we wrapped up our stay and returned home from Hawaii on Sunday. We had a great two weeks. Both resorts were great.

While Kauai Lagoons is a fantastic resort with a great view from our IV villa, I wouldn't put it in the top three resorts that we have visited. We had some housekeeping issues during our stay. The tile floor in the villa was in need of some water and a mop. After walking on it for a few minutes, the bottoms of our feet would turn black. This is not the only resort we have had this issue at. Also, after returning to our room after a mid week tidy, we found a toilet brush left behind on the dresser in the third bedroom. Stopped up toilets in the bathrooms of the fitness center on the last day of our stay while we were killing time at the activity center waiting to leave for the airport was not impressive. I reported this issue to the front desk, but they hadn't fixed it before we had to leave.

I wrote a longer review that hasn't posted yet. The villa and view at Kauai Lagoons is great. The resort is secluded, but doesn't have a lot of onsite amenities. If we return to Kauai in the future and don't need a 3BR unit, I think we will try out the Waiohai property. We visited there for the day and it has much more the big resort feel that Ocean Pointe, Grande Vista and some of the other large resorts have. Kauai Lagoons felt much the same as Crystal Shores. They have the villa, patio and view going for them, but as for other amenities, they are limited.

I am not sure that this is where the sidewalk ends other than the fact that it is where the roadway ends. Don't get me wrong. It is a great resort and we had a great stay. If the resort didn't have that view and was located elsewhere, it would be underwhelming. I think it is what it is because of where it is. If you have a large group, it is the only property on Kauai with 3BR units, so it worked great for our group of five adults. If just two of us or a smaller group traveling, I would look at one of the other Marriott properties on Kauai.
