We have decided to only rent a car for 3 days during our week at St. John. Any experiences with O'Connor Car rental on the property? We thought this would be the easiest thing to do. We will be there Nov. 5-12. Do they rent for a full 24 hour time period? Should we make a reservation if we want a Jeep Liberty? If they don't have a car we want there, will they bring one from their other location?
Thanks.

They have a website now, so just fill out the information requested. Their location is very convenient -- next to the tennis courts right on-site, beside the tennis shack. They have limited hours, 8am to 4:30pm with noon-1pm for lunch.

Tips:

1) Do NOT remove the soft cover from your jeep or you will be charged. It doesn't matter if you put it back on. If they see it without the top, they'll charge you.

2) Pack a Neat Sheet or some plastic liner to line the floors because they'll charge you a fee for vacuuming out sand.

3) Try to get the staff to smile, if you dare. My husband reported success, but this has been met with a great deal of skepticism from others on this board.

Carolyn,

We will also be there from November 5-12. Please let me know if you would like to meet with us for some drinks.

Thanks for the info, we will be there next month and were planning on doing the same thing.:)

We have rented from them with no problems. If they say the open at 10.....they may or mat not be there at 10.....so be flexible...they are.

They are not the cheapest, but are the most convenient.

Please report back if you do get them to smile. I've tried many times. My husband makes fun of me for trying.

In addition - pick up your car within the 2 hour window that you say you will be there or they will charge you.

By far the most convenient place to rent your vehicle when staying at the Westin - but don't expect friendly and terribly accommodating staff.

Go in right after lunch. I think they "relax" during their lunch hour and it makes them much more apt to smile. Last time we picked up a car right after lunch, there was "olfactory" evidence of their relaxation techniques. I took myself back to high school (only on the opposite side of the interaction), became a close talker, lots of eye contact, etc. DD said I was mean, but I had fun. And, I definitely got them to smile and laugh. :D

Right now we are all about convenience. Most car rental agencies consider our week 45 "low season" but not O'Connor. We will have high season rates. Good thing is that they have 24 hour rentals unlike some other agencies on the island.

Lisa,
What is a "Neat Sheet"? So my goal while at WSJ is to get the O'Connor staff to crack a smile. Of course they are probably already mad at us as I put The Jeep Liberty our 1st, 2nd AND 3rd choice of car on the online reservation :hysterical: My husband is 6'8" and there are only so many cars he can fit in plus he doesn't like driving a BIG 4WD on St. John. We will leave that to the Penn Truckers.

Sounds good!

Lisa, What is a "Neat Sheet"?

It's just a lightweight tarp that you throw on the ground at the beach or grass. I bought one a few a few years ago and we still use it (though it wasn't even close to being $60!). I actually didn't bring my NeatSheet to St. John, but instead we packed a few black lawn garbage bags, cut them to size, and lined the floor and trunk with them. When we were finished the car, we just pulled the liner out, along with the sand.

There's also a vacuum shop on the way to Cruz Bay, which would probably be a lot cheaper than the $75 O'Connors will charge for cleaning out the vehicle.
