I am looking for updates on OceanWatch. We are seniors who will be traveling in late October and have an Oceanfront room. I would love recommendations on building and places to see and eat. My husband loves seafood. We are not familiar with the area so any help is appreciated.

We stayed at OceanWatch in the Scallop building a few years ago..we had an Oceanside Villa and loved the view..the Conch building is also a great choice…both are closest to the ocean….weather was sunny in the low to mid 70’s…nearby Hook and Barrel restaurant has wonderful seafood…highly recommend.

Take a drive to Brookgreen gardens in Murrells inlet while you are in Myrtle Beach. we always enjoy lunch in their cafe too.

Croissants bakery and grill right near hook and barrel has delicious breakfast, bakery and lunch sandwiches.

There are only a few Oceanfront rooms in the Conch and Scallop buildings. Only the end units. Most views are Oceanside in those buildings. All units in the Starfish building are considered Oceanfront. the few rooms in the Conch and Scallop that are considered Oceanfront are definitely the closest to the ocean but don’t necessarily have the best views. We prefer our Oceanside units on a high floor for views.

Recommending eating establishments depends on if you have transportation or not. October is a great time to be at MOW. Great weather and far fewer people. We have been going to MB for over 35 years and bought a second home there during covid. If you have transportation get out and see the area. There are many here that will recommend Hook and Barrel or Crave. I’m not one of them. But, that’s just because we do get out and try and go to at least one new restaurant a week. There are several good restaurants from Calabash down to Murrels Inlet. Many decent places in Barefoot Landing and Broadway at the Beach.

I assume this is a points reservation. Generally points reservations are treated as a lower priority than owned weeks so you may get a room that's technically OF but doesn't have the best of views. If by chance it's an exchange, the view type is not guaranteed. I'd decide what you would prefer and call the resort about 2 weeks aheas and put in a specific but not too specific a request. For example it might be a given building and high floor or it might just be high floor considering that is likely to be the best view.

I agree with you Dean on calling and telling them what your priorities/ needs are rather than asking for a specific building necessarily.

You will find that there are dozens of seafood places within a ten mile radius. Most will focus on fried seafood and steamed shrimp. Some restaurants advertise "Callabash" seafood. Callabash is a town with a harbor with several restaurants just across the border of North Carolina. The seafood is flash fried with a very light batter. It may be worth a drive across the border. Investigate it online ahead of time to see if it's your cup of tea. Not a lot of fine dining in Myrtle Beach, but lots of competition and good options otherwise.

I see this more with DVC than MVC where people are so specific or so complicated in their requests that they make it almost impossible to be successful. Something like a specific room or they put in like 4 or 5 different requests. IMO these type of requests signify a lack of understanding of the process and a lack of consideration for the staff tasked with unit assignments. It also tends to tic off the room assigners. I'd put this in the same category as abusive demands to change rooms due to the quality of the view type or some similar issue that shows a lack of understanding of the product.

Regardless of what you might read, there are many fine dining options on The Grand Strand if that’s what you want. Will be glad to pm you suggestions if requested. Most people just don’t care, they are at the beach.

The other thing is that if I haven’t been to the resort I might not really know exactly where I want to be.
Many people ask options - and I have done that too- but if you just tell the room controller ”I want quiet” or “ I really enjoy afternoon sun” or whatever they can choose what’s best from what they have to give. I have been doing this over the last year or so and no one has sounded annoyed and I have been happy with my placement (except once at Crystal Shores).

Thanks for the responses. We will have a car and we did book with points. I liked the idea about asking for priorities/ needs rather than buildings. I will call as they said they take requests about 20 days out. We like to spend time on the balcony and walking on the beach. We love history and digging out authentic places to eat. I visited the Brookgreen site and its looks beautiful. They have lights at night which sounds interesting. Jwalk03, thank you for the great map you created. It really helps to see the units color coded.

This would fall under my thoughts of reasonable requests though it might be too generic. It would give the room controllers free range to put you almost anywhere. If I were going to be that generic I'd call the resort and ask what to request to get those type of options.

This has been when booking with points so I’m locked into a category and can’t be anywhere.
Also at locations I am new too where I don’t really know what I want.
And i do have a conversation with the controller so they know what I am looking for.

You probably need to convert it to PDF first.

The concierge desk can provide a restaurant recommendation list that includes discounts, free appetizers and the like. There are a number of Calabash-style, all-you-can-eat restaurants along the Grand Strand and close to OceanWatch, but we have never tried them.

Our favorite restaurants for quality and consistency are:

1. The Parson's Table, Little River, SC - award winning restaurant with local and Coastal Carolina favorites housed in a converted church built in 1885 (portions of the church including stained glass windows, chandelier, and doors have been salvaged and reused from various southern churches). Extensive wine list. About a 20-30 minute drive from MOW, but worth it.

2. The Brentwood Restaurant and Wine Bistro, Little River, SC - award winning low country French cuisine features five separate dining rooms located in a restored historic home. Offers an extensive wine list and outdoor dining. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, they offer a three-course dinner and ghost tour.

3. Chestnut Hill, Restaurant Row, Myrtle Beach - menu includes abundant seafood, beef, and poultry selections using fresh, local, and homemade ingredients. We love their house salad with house dressing with rolls and muffins. Desserts are fresh, locally made. Recommend making reservations requesting a table next to the windows overlooking the lake to see the turtles and alligators. Sunday brunch is phenomenal!

Our favorite Italian restaurants serving seafood are:

4. Ciao! Italian Restaurant and Bar, Myrtle Beach - dishes are made from scratch daily with freshest ingredients. Eggplant parmesan and grouper francaise among the best we've ever had. Custom built wine cellar compliments each meal.

5. Lombardo's Italian Restaurant, Myrtle Beach - warm, quiet, romantic ambiance with white linen table cloths and rich mahogany woods, but suitable for larger family gatherings with a private dining room. Authentic, traditional Italian cuisine and offer live music on certain nights.

Other recommendations:

6. The Boundary House Restaurant, Calabash , NC - worth the drive to this quaint town just across the SC border. Located across from "Callahan's of Calabash" (extensive, unique gift shop destination). One of several restaurants located in Calabash, but we found The Boundary House to be consistently excellent with fresh seafood, beef, and poultry selections. A visit to "Back Porch Ice Cream Shop" across the street after dinner is highly recommended!

7. Bimini's Oyster Bar and Seafood Market, Myrtle Beach - this fresh seafood restaurant is located not far from MOW. Offers outdoor casual dining. For take out orders, one can pick up dinner at the separate seafood market and gift shop entrance next door.

8. Sea Captain's House, Myrtle Beach - ocean front seafood dining has been an institution in Myrtle Beach for many years.

9. Main Street Bistro, North Myrtle Beach - small, quaint restaurant where the locals eat that does not accept reservations so go early. Have daily seafood specials.

10. 42nd Street Bar & Grill, Myrtle Beach - don't be fooled by the name or the fact that it is located in a strip mall; it more closely resembles an upscale, yet casual neighborhood restaurant. While not billed as a seafood restaurant, it does offer many seafood dishes. Has a solid wine selection.

Hope this helps!

Love your recommendations! You suggestions were right on for us. We went to The Parson's house, (what a find!), The Brentwood, and The Boundary House last time. I can't wait to try this list on our visit this year!
