Has anyone stayed here that can tell me a little more about the place? We are thinking about going there next year with another family, mainly because they have a large size unit for lower points than all of us could stay at any other beach but I'm a little worried about the lack of info I'm finding about a few details that will be important to us...

What is the beach area like? are any of the units close enough to the beach to walk? also, how often does the shuttle run if you are not close enough to walk, or maybe choose to stay closer to the pool area?

What else is there to do outside of the resort? one review I read said there is nothing within a hours driving distance so wondering if that includes restaurants or local shopping?

anything you can tell me appreciated! thanks :)

Iaminak,
Edisto Island is a decent vacation provided you can live with very few activities.
My family is going there in August. It is our second visit in the past 5 years.
Wyndham dominates the island.
There is one golf course, surrounded by Wyndham. Half a dozen fair to poor restaurants.
One grocery store - Piggly Wiggly. Walmart is an hour away in Walterboro.
The Wyndham units are scattered all over the island. We stay on the sound. No pool on those units. You have to walk a 1/4 mile to another Wyndham to use the pool. Wynham has a "beach club" on the main beach. Nothing fancy. A few old beach chairs surrounded by a fence to keep riff-raff out, I presume. The actual beach is OK but it is not a long , open beach like Myrtle or Hilton Head. It is cut-up by rock barriers every few hundred feet. Makes it a pain to take a long walk on the beach.
There are bike trails, maybe 5 miles total, including some highway. take your own bikes as the rentals are expensive, compared to Hilton Head.
A trip to Charleston takes an hour or so. Lots to see and do there.
In short - not an upscale location but OK if you like quiet.

Some people love Edisto, some people hate it. The resort is campus style with several HOA's and several different areas. They are not all walkable. Quality and upkeep also varies between the Hoa's. Typical old style wyndham rec available- mini golf. basic pools, bike rentals, ping pong. The beach is nice and better shelling than other area Carolina beaches. There are a few bar/restaurants and a small pigglywiggly and the golf course. I thought it wasn't very good but my husband thought given the size of the store that they do a good job. It is about half the size of a normal medium size grocery store. Not a whole lot of choices and on the expensive side for that reason.

If you need to be entertained, then you won't like it. Most of the time when people describe a place as commercialized, I think they are exaggerating. Not an exaggeration in Edisto. Family and friend beach time.

We love it and go there as often as we can. We find we can walk on the beach for quite a ways and there's always a nice group coming out for the sunset.
May I suggest that you join TUG.? The reviews alone are more than worth the cost. There are 32 for Ocean Ridge. I always read them before booking anywhere.
