My husband and I and another couple (ages mid 40's and 50') are going to stay at Ocean Pointe April 23-30. This is our first visit to this area in Florida. While the guys cruise on their motorcycles by day, we are wondering if there are any bicycle paths nearby where us ladies will feel safe. We have never been to Southeast Florida and wonder if the area is bicycle friendly.

Thanks!

I would say yes. There is a short walk/bike path along the inlet beside the Kingfish building. There are plenty of side streets where I saw lots of people walking and riding bikes. The street in front of the property has a bike lane along the street. The poeple that live on the island seem to be active. We walked every morning and passed several people walking and biking.
The resort is great. I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Actually, your best bet is to take your bikes on the water taxi that runs from the Sailfish Marina to West Palm Beach. When you get off the boat you can ride over the bridge to Palm Beach, and there they have a public trail which runs along the intercostal waterway.

This bike/walking trail runs right in front of all those multi million dollar homes, and it is a very interesting (and easy) ride.

Do they have bike rentals at Ocean Pointe like they do at some of the HHI Marriotts?

Yes they do, but they're not cheap.

We actually rented our bikes at a shop on Blue Herron Blvd right on Singer Island. I can't remember the name of it, but there is a locksmith very close by.

I don't even remember what we paid, however it definitely was cheaper than renting from Marriott.

This is absolutely the best ride. You ride right along the intercoastal waterway - it is a gorgeous ride. Coming back, we skipped the bike/walk trails and rode along the beach road. Very little traffic, beautiful homes on one side, and ocean on the other. We take our bikes everywhere with us and this was one of the best rides ever.

Have you done this recently?

The summer before last we were told the water taxi no longer takes bikes. We had done what you suggested a few years earlier and it was great! :cheer: but was not able to do it on our last visit. :bawl:

I think we last did this in 2005 or 2006. I assume that they still take the bicycles on the water taxi; but maybe they don't anymore?????

We didn't take ours on the water taxi. We have a hitch bike rack, so we just put them on there and drove over. We then rode around a little a found a quiet little side street to park on right by one of the many bike path entrances - parking was free.

That is what we think we are going to have to do when we return. Last summer we rode around the local neighborhood, but stopped at the long ride in road since it didn't have a path the whole way. Thanks.

Bev - if you cross the road right past where the Ocean mall used to be, the bike/walk path will pick up on that side. I have ridden it all the way up to MacArthur Park. That was actually a really nice ride - I paid the $2 to get into the park, locked up my bike (they have racks), and wandered around the park and the beach for awhile. It's very nice there. I then rode back the same way I had come. The path goes past the houses and then runs right along the intercoastal waterway. Not counting the time in the park, the ride took me about maybe 45 minutes (just an estimate).

By the way, DaisyDog, I did the ride to MacArthur Park by myself - I felt plenty safe. This was just a year ago, when we were down for Easter 2008.

Also, I'm not overly active now (although was a 3-sport athlete through all of my school years), I'm in my mid-40's and didn't find either of the rides to be too taxing. I always take a lot of water and maybe an apple or a banana and a granola bar with me. I have a basket on my bike that holds my cooler, cell phone, fleece, etc. I don't generally ride for speed - I like to take in the view.

DaisyDog,
Below is a link for a bike shop in Palm beach. They rent bicycles and scooters. Their website gives you a map of the Palm Beach Bike trail. We store our bikes at OP but some friends last year rented from them to use the trail. Their bikes are high quality and in very good shape. Scooters and motorcycles are not allowed on most of the trail and there actually is a 10 mph speed limit. It's a great relaxing ride and easily done in 1/2 day. The trail is 4 miles long from the Biltmore Hotel to the inlet on the intercoastal side. the rest of what the map depicts as a "trail" is actually roadway. We usually take the trail to the inlet, then follow it to the beach on the Atlantic side and then double back using the inner streets and just gaze at the houses on the way back.

The ride to MacArthur Park is also great. Their are plenty of streets to cruise into on the intercoastal side. As Luv2vacation said it's very safe if you follow the route he indicated. Palm Beach Shores is also a great, safe place to ride if you just want to cruise around a bit.

Thank you to all - this info is exactly what I was looking for! It sounds like it be well worth the effort to take our bikes with us on this trip. Actually, it won't take much since the boys are trailering their motorcycles down.

Looking forward to our stay at OP -
