I have a lovely timeshare in the Caribbean during a wonderful time of year. Due to divorce/death I need to sell it. Any advice on notifying the timeshare that I intend to sell and see if they have right of first refusal or any stipulations on selling? This is not associated with any of the big timeshare companies. Small, privately owned.

Prepare yourself for the very real possibility that your timeshare is not worth anything and your best option is to give it away. Especially with a small, independent timeshare the ease of finding a buyer for it, even if it theoretically might be worth something to someone, is probably small.

I am prepared to give it away if needed. I know it is probably worth almost nothing. Any advice for giving it away or charging a very minimal amount? I am totally new to this, but several timeshare "experts" have offered to get rid of it for thousands of dollars. Not going that route.

Those are all a complete scam. They will take your money and do absolutely nothing for you. I would start with contacting the resort to see if they have a deedback program. Some of these smaller resorts also have an idea of where these things could be posted for sale / giveaway (perhaps to existing owners who wants an additional week). You can also post the timeshare in the TUGBBS "free timeshares" forum to see if anyone wants to take it (make sure to include information about the resort, the week you own, the miantenance fees, if it trades with any exchanges, etc.) Whatever you do, don't give any upfront money to anyone promising to get you out of your timeshare, as indicated they are all scams.

You could also check ebay completed listings to see if any other weeks at your resort have sold there in recent memory, to give you an idea if the resort has any resale value.
