My wife (age around 50) has noticed a thinning and loss of hair. Her hair is fine and not real thick by nature She tried Rogaine but it seemed to burn her scalp and didn't do much. She is now trying Nioxin System 1 and has been using it about 1 month. Still losing hair. Reviews on Amazon seem to be good overall. I had my hair cut today and with my male pattern baldness (receding in front and small spot in back) and the salon mentioned Nioxin System 2. Again overall positive feedback on Amazon.

I had pretty much given up on trying anything for myself as hair replacements, etc are too expensive. This product is intriguing. My overall interest is for my wife. This issue seems to hit the psyche of women harder.

Any suggestions from your experience with this product or others? Thanks.

My salon is currently pushing this new product. I know nothing about it. I might try it eventually. My hair has thinned, in front, it is long, and I get a clump of hair in the shower when I wash my hair. I already pay my salon a fortune for cut and color and not looking to spend a lot more.

Has your wife been checked for thyroid issues? A symptom is hair loss, and it's not necessarily a sudden thing. My own hair fell out quite a lot, when I my dose of thyroid was too small.

My DW also has baby-fine hair that has been noticeably thinning. About 6 months ago, she got a full physical and had her thyroid intake upped a bit. She swears that her hair is thicker and there's less of it on the drain. A plus, she says it's easier to lose weight. Who am I to argue?

Thanks for the insights. Yes, she has had her thyroid checked twice and that doesn't seem to be an issue. She is definitely a worrier, so I am sure that doesn't help her situation.

As with anything, the products out there seem to work for some people and not for others. We are hoping her current product of choice shows some positive results. Time will tell.

Forget Nioxin. I used it for years. It used to work, but I don't think it's that great anymore, for whatever reason. One of the problems is that you can't trust WHAT you are buying anymore. Nioxin (and other hair care companies) is having a huge problem with hair salons buying the products in larger quantities than they can sell, then selling it back to "suppliers", who then stockpile it in warehouses until they have enough to then sell it to big stores like Target and Kroger. The problem comes when the product sits on the warehouse shelves for years as they build enough supply. Once you get it at that "discount" price (cheaper than the expensive salons), the product is often expired and has lost it's effectiveness. That is, if it wasn't copycatted to begin with. These companies have a whole department dedicated to Diversion, which is what this practice is called. If you see "only sold in salon" products at your local grocer, you can be guaranteed that this is what has happened to the product. It's not "illegal" unfortunately, though the companies are trying to get laws passed to stop the process.

We switched to a brand called Bosley recently. It is a much better product IMO. Within a week my hair loss stopped. Once I was done with my first bottle (about 6-8 weeks), I noticed a fair amount of new hair growth. Now I am finishing my 2nd or 3rd bottle, and the hairgrowth is long enough to be in my eyes now. It's not horribly expensive either. A large bottle of shampoo costs $20, and the conditioner costs $23. It lasts 6-8 weeks.

Thanks Laura. We will check into that product as well. I hope you continue to get the results you are currently getting.

Hair thinning may occur after a certain age if you are not concerned about your health and living a stressful life. So, I suggest include some nutritious items in your diet and employ a good hair care regimen for your hair as that may help you to prevent hair loss in future.

We saw a report on the news about using lasers for hair loss. The product they mentioned was called the Laser Cap.

For many of us, me being one of them, the solution is simply to give your hair a more "friendly" environment to grow in. That's what products such as Bosley do. Alot of shampoos and conditioners leave buildup, as do hair care products. Hair follicles get plugged. Products like Bosley are like using good soil and fertilizer for your plants. Plants grow better in the right environment, as does hair. It makes all the difference for me, as I have thin, fine hair, and I tend to use several hair styling products to give my hair volume and style. Looks good, but not great for the scalp.

For others it's health issues, genetics, etc. That's another story altogether.
