My wife and 2 girl friends are doing 3 day girls trip to NYC in December. I was given the task of finding and booking a reservation, ideally around $1k+/- for the 3 nights total to fit everyones budget. They are fine with two doubles, or a king/sofa bed sleeping situation. Preference is to be in/near midtown.

Thoughts?
  1. Is MVC NYC Pulse at the Strand worth it vs a normal Marriott hotel?
  • 500 DC Pts/night in a deluxe double (~1500 DC Pts Total)
  • $225/night cash after MVC Presidential discount ($675 before taxes). $265/night without MVC Presidential discount.
Can my wife check-in without me using the MVC Presidential discount code? I am the primary MVC owner on our account, but her name is on all deeds.
2. Other Marriott hotel recommendations for 3 girls that is clean and within budget?

Fairfield Inn?
Residence Inn?
Westin?

Similar to question above. My wife has no MR status. I have Plat Premier. I assume this means she will have no lounge access for any hotel?

Thanks for the input and recommendations.

We reaaly enjoyed the Marriott Marquee on Time Square. I dp not know if that will fall within ypur budget though. We used MR points when we stayed.

As far as lou ge access goes, strickly speaking she will not but what we have done previously is to just say the person with status will be arriving later and that normally works.

We stayed at the Residence Inn. It's right next to the subway entrance(39th & 6th Ave) and includes breakfast(as I remember, the breakfast buffet was pretty extensive) and has a full kitchen (if that is important to you). I would definitely stay there again.

I have not seen this in any published rules for use of the MVC discount codes, but I would have expected any named owner (not just the Primary owner, but also the Secondary owner) to be eligible for using the relevant code and receiving the associated discount.
I would be very disappointed if this were not the case.

Thanks. That is my hope, but maybe others can comment. I may ask in a separate thread.

Here are the terms presented at the Marriott hotels screen when entering MVC code.
  • MVC President and Chairman's Club Level
  • - For MVC President and Chairman's Club Level Owners ONLY
  • - 35 percent off Leisure
  • - Owner must be present at check-in
  • - Limit of 2 villas per owner per night.
My fear is that the hotel will reject the discount when my wife (and her friends) check-in, since only my name is primary on the MVC account itself.....even though my wife and I are owners on the 'deeded weeks' which give our MVC Presidential status.

Just came back from Marriott Marquis. Nice hotel in the middle of Times Square. Lots of people! Very expensive for food - especially in the hotel. Buffets are around $40 p/p for breakfast! We had 4 in the room me, 2 sons & grandson. 2 double beds and pull out sofa. 18 and older! Had a lot of fun.

All you have to do is call the hotel and tell them your wife is checking in. I've done it with my wife, my kids, for rewards redemption stays, MVC, etc. Never, ever have had any issues. Only once I was asked to sign something allowing my son to check in and it WAS at the NYC Pulse. That was using the 6VC code. The way I got around it was by prepaying the stay using my cc.

Good luck.
I realise now though that although our MVC Owner accounts are linked, my wife and I have separate accounts (both showing as Chairman’s Club status) as I am the Primary Owner for some of our resort weeks and my wife is Primary Owner for other of our resort weeks.

For that rate of $225, I would pay the cash rate vs. using DC points. I doubt you would be able to book a hotel room in midtown Manhattan for a rate even close to that, especially the Marriott Marquis. The Residence Inn is very close and nice and a great location, but i would think the cash rate would be pretty high there too. Perhaps you could use a Category certificate for one of the nights at the Residence Inn.

We have never had a problem having either my wife or I checking in at any MVC property, when traveling separately or if one of us arrives before the other.

Good luck.

I believe this is the case for us also. How did you validate, as I can only see my name as Primary Owner online? Is the only way to call MVC?

Assuming the NYC Pulse property is nice in comparison to other NYC Marriott Hotels, I'm thinking the $225 is a decent price. Only downside is no free breakfast, no lounge, etc....but that's okay.

Even if you book the discounted cash stay at the NYC Pulse via Marriott.com, you might want to check the DC points ressie availability 60 days out. 1500 points at a 30% discount with your Presidential status valued at approx 60 cents a point rental rate of points gets you to $210 a night value with no taxes (and NYC hotel taxes are not insignificant). If you are able to snag it, you can always cancel the cash ressie.

Your wife should have her own account number and she should create a login id for herself with her owner number. That way, she can log in and show to the check in person to show her MVC status if necessary.

Appears she does have her own owner number. It is a secondary number, while the owner number assigned to me is primary. MVCI was able to send us ID cards...which show both names on both owner IDs. This should solve any request for proof of ownership.

Just returned from 5 nights at the Pulse. This was our second trip. We have also stayed at the Springhill Suites next door. The Pulse rooms are too small for couples let alone friends IMO. Very very small bathroom. At the Springhill Suites or the Fairfield you would also get breakfast which saves time as well as money when getting the best use of your vacation. We use the Pulse when we have points in the holding account we need to use as NYC is only a few hours from us. The 37th Street location is great. We started getting breakfast at the McDonald's a couple of blocks away. There is a market across the street with good food and snacks at great prices for NYC. Of course you want to eat great food at restaurants for your other meals. BTW Cafe China a block away is a 1 star Michelin we always go to when there for dinner. Before the theatre, Le Rivage on Restaurant Row is a really good value.

Somehow post didn't show up - sorry. We just returned from the Pulse NYC for 5 nights. IMO too small for couples let alone friends. Bathroom tiny. Been there twice. Have also stayed in Springhill Suites and Fairfield on same street - 37th - and you get free breakfast which saves time and money and I seem to remember a bit larger rooms. If you go consider eating at the nearby McDonalds unless looking for an experience breakfast. Also the Green Market across the street has good food compared to other places nearby. We have tried a few breakfast places nearby but nothing was very good. BTW we go to the Café China a block away every time we are there. One Michelin star Szechuan that never disappoints.

We go in 3 weeks to the Pulse, disappointing to hear but at least we will have tried it!
